I've recently replaced my 'S' plate 100 series diesel with a newer '55' plate diesel model.

On my new car I notice that on a steep downhill the auto box torque converter lock up activates to give me engine braking when I touch the brakes, which is no bad thing, but sometimes it holds the gear and does not want to let go after the descent is finished and I apply the throttle. If I move the gear selector left to right and back again to activate and de-activate the lockup it clears itself and the lock up lets go.

I did not have this feature on my old 'S' reg and having read the manual for the new car cover to cover, there is no mention of this feature. So....is this lock up on descent braking a feature or a fault....???????

It's called "AI" or artifical intelligence, it automaticaly does engine braking when you go down hills under certain conditions, a pain in the *beep* I reckon, mine has previously stayed in third on a few occasions and I took it to toyota to have it fixed. I don't know what they did but the dropped the pan under my strict instruction not to. When it sticks it is reset by turning the ignition off.

As I understand it, your new car has a completely different gearbox from the old one; more gears and more electronics. There's no drain plug on the box and no dipstick to check the fluid level. All very clever, but I must admit to preferring the old fashioned approach with opportunities for checking and maintaining (TLC stuff).

Oh well, that's progress.

It sounds  like a speed sensor , may be on the ABS or on the gearbox not signaling correctly , you could try disconnecting the battery so the systems could revert to factory settings and see how that goes .

AI (Artificial Intelligence)- SHIFT Control
1) General
In addition to the switching of the shift pattern through the pattern select switch, the AI- SHIFT control
enables the ECM to estimate the road conditions and the driver’s intention in order to automatically
switch the optimal shift pattern. As a result, comfortable ride has been realized at high levels.

2) Road Condition Support Control
Under road condition support control, the ECM determines throttle valve opening angle and the vehicle
speed whether the vehicle is being driven uphill or downhill.
To achieve an optimal drive force while driving uphill, this control prevents the transmission from upshifting
to the 4th or 5th gear. To achieve an optimal engine brake effect while driving downhill, this control
automatically downshifts the transmission to the 4th or 3rd gear

3) Driver’s Intention Support Control
Estimates the driver’s intention based on the accelerator operation and vehicle condition to switch to
a shift pattern that is well-suited to each driver, without the need to operate the shift pattern select switch.
