Hi,
New to the FJ40 scene.
Currently working in Yemen where I have picked up a 1979, rest of the world spec FJ40. This means free float rear axle, 3 speed, no power steering, drums all around and and f2 engine
The vehicle is in good shape, but I would like to made the following changes
1. Power steering
2. Disk front brakes
3. fit an auto or 5 speed box
Being in Yemen - replacement parts are limited to those sourced from other Toyotas
Anyone have any ideas on how to proceed?
Cheers

Some North American Fj40s after 1978 were fitted with power steering, so like you say, they may be rare in Yemen. Similarly, I think, that spec also had disc brakes but it's worth looking at 60 series for disc brakes. Gearbox? US spec again.
Maybe this helps

What do you need to do to transplant 6o series front disc brakes on a 40 series front axle. Are there any UK models where a power steering can be sourced from? Maybe a 60 series or hilux?
PMD6 , have you tried breakers yards in Yemen. I am in Oman at the moment and I have seen many 40 series in various conditions, some crash victims in breakers yards. I have also seen an occasional 40 series being used as daily transport. If Yemen is a problem try Oman.

This is covered on the forum www.ih8mud.com looks a simple job just some filing of the inner knuckle housing to allow hilux/60 series birfield to fit and the complete hub from the donor.
I break Hilux's couldn't believe my luck when I found out I had all the bits already.
Have you considered posting 40 series parts back from Oman?? |
