This is for Landcrusher really but someone else might like it as well This is a 55Kg gas bottle adapted for use as a brazier. After aquiring the bottle I left the valve open to vent the tiny amount of pressurized gas remaining and then screwed the valve out so I could fill the bottle with water. Somewhere in the murky depths of my memory is the thought that butane is hevier than air so just leaving the top off a bottle doesn't get all the gas out. Filling the bottle with water will displace any gas left though. Then I cut the gas bottle roughly in two thinking I might make two of these things but the top half has long since been lost! I cut big slots in the side for air flow, profiled the top so it will still breath with a flat top on, welded some handles on the side because sometimes you need to move it when it's hot and welded some tabs inside almost at the bottom to support a grill. The charcoal or whatever goes on the grill and having space underneath it means it draws really well and we often get the sides glowing and turning translucent.
This is the only picture I have at the moment but I'll take some more soon and add them:
As well as the top grill I now have a piece of 3mm steel plate I cut to size to cover the top with a few holes in it. When used on a camping trip last August we had bags of instant lite charcoal and it burnt up very fast so this new top plate gives a bit more control of the burn. Next mod will be to weld a short pin at the edge of and perpendicular to the plate and a matching reciever for it on the side of the brazier at the top, the two things making a sort of hinge. The idea is that the plate can be dropped into place on its locator and then is easily swung out of the way to throw fuel on the fire but still provide a hot plate, then I can get rid of the top grill. If you've seen an Oz Pig then that's what I'm pinching the idea from and I shall also be adding some short legs for use on surfaces that require it. Here's Tony's pig for reference:

Having stood near this brazier I can honestly say it kicks out a huge amount of heat which was much needed in January |

This is the mark II. The mark I was a smaller bottle with no grill in the bottom and it didn't really have very good heat output and used to get choked up quite easily. The size of the Mark II seems pretty optimal for getting a decent quantity of fuel burning without suffocating it. Just need to remember that coal stinks and easy lite burns almost as fast as you can put it in (and sparks a lot!). The lumpwood charcoal is much better but I couldn't get any more in January, strange that _________________ Jon m0zxj

Here are some photos I’ve pinched from one of the Jeep forums I visit. These might give you some alternative ideas – not that there is anything wrong with Wildsmiths’s design!

Cheers Jon. Just what I needed. It's on my list to make at some point. Simple, safe and efficient. Now if only I had a bigger truck... It may have to go on the roof
