Hello i have to say i don't like that design and surely you want the spare wheel up a bit higher to help with steep hills etc.
I like your bumper gavlad its flush and neat, so i reckon the swing away carrier has got to be the best option. Joe _________________ LC4, BF Goodrich all terrains, apart from that bog standard. |

Hiya Joe - thanks for your input. I agree with you on the placement of the wheel for sure - defo needs to be higher up. With the 35's, I think the rear view mirror will become largely redundant!!!
Its more a discussion on the two principles than the detail deisgn I was hoping to engage but I tend to agree with you that a swing away might be better in the long run... Just need to come up with a neat design which I need to get to soon - making the bumper so flush is causing me a headache on the carrier but I'm sure I will come up with sommat
How did you enjoy the weekend? Looked good from the snaps I've seen. Was that you with the green recovery strap on the front of the silver cruiser? _________________ Gav

On your carrier on the 100, do the pins have bearings in them or are they just sleeves? I was wondering how crucial it is to have bearings at those points... |
Forgot this bit didn't I. No roller bearings, just sleaves but they're smooth enough and you'd have to open and close it a lot of times before anything is going to wear out I think. I looked at a couple of typical bumper corner mounted swing outs on 80's at the weekend BTW and that area needs to be well thought out to stop it flexing. Both the 4x4rus ones I looked at were flexing the side wing of the bumper a lot when open and wiggled up and down The load spread of the OEM style is good and I can't make anything flex with quite vigorous heaving up and down on it fully opened so I'm gaining confidence in that as a solution. _________________ Jon m0zxj

And I thought you were just ignoring me...
Interesting... And yes, I am feeling qute paranoid about fixing this carrier out at the end of my bumper 'cos of the leverage/flex thats going to be imposed on it... Probably part of the thought process of using a swing down carrier from the central part of the bumper TBH... Talk about avoiding the issue - just gerrit beefed up boy!!! _________________ Gav

Hello yeah thats me with the green strap, I didnt need to use it though. I only went for the sunday but it was excellent and the l/c did suprise me how well they perform straight out of the box. I used to own a discovery with lift kit muds etc and i reckon it would of struggled on some parts. That rear difflock is brill. anyway goodluck with the carrier. hi Gavin
i have emailed you some pics
mine is nothing special but does what i wanted it to
there is a mark 2 in the pipe line
with bigger folding table, easier tie backs and folding stays
im using a winch to lift mine up but i did try gas struts but could not get the linkage right
due to the carrier going over centre
downsides to having a swing down carrier is time to get into the boot, ive lifted mine quit high so rear view mirror is not good
i think which ever way you swing theres a good side and a bad side to it _________________ cheers

Hi Mark - thanks for the photos. Interesting... Look forward to seeing MkII design
The table idea is quite a neat one & with the lift you have fitted to yours can double up to be a step into the truck as well!!! Dunno why you mounted it so high with a lift like that either I'm not expecting to see much out of the back once the tyres up there either...
All food for thought whichever kinky way its done _________________ Gav
