My P reg Colorado is guzzling litres of water and billowing steamy smoke from the exhaust. My garage says that the head gasket is gone or the block is cracked They say if the block is cracked the car is a write off because a new engine would cost more than it is worth. I paid them £17000 for the car two year ago. Does anyone know if this is true, or if I can get a reconditioned engine from anywhere? I love the car and don't want to lose it or my £17k!! I would be really grateful for advice

Garages are basically conmen. They survive by asking you to pay £55 per hour labour charge and paying the grease monkey who does the work £8.50 per hour. The owner does not holiday in Devon out of season, believe me. Nor does he drive a 7 year old car. Sure as shooting he doesn't live in a council house!

If your head gasket has gone it's not a big deal. A few hundred quid at most. Even if your engine has totalled itself a decent garage will try to find you a good engine from a written off wreck, quite possibly younger than yours and with less miles. This is going to cost you up to a few thou, or if you strike really lucky maybe a few hundred, but not £17k! You need a decent, non-franchised, garage. Don't pay more than £30 per hour for labour, and ask them to source 2nd hand or recon parts. Post back for more encouragement.
