With your new found GPSGate, are you happy with this one then?
I'm now shopping for a GPSr and options are the above or this waterproof one
or just using the phone. (last option) _________________ Cheers,

Is yours waterproof where the cable goes in Gary? If that part is outside you might want to seal it, they may expect that side to be in the dry. Waiting for the USB powered devices to aquire signals can be frustrating Crispin so I'd say get something you can keep permanently powered like Gary's rathen than USB. _________________ Jon m0zxj

I was thinking of getting the serial one as my pc has a serial port on it. Might as well use it. I think I have a convertor for it as well from it's round plug to D9 (From an old gps I ripped apart). If it does not fit, I'll cut the cable _________________ Cheers,

Was thinking, if you have a phone with GPS in it you should be able to, via bluetooth, connect it to your laptop as well. Nothing fancy about it.
Off to google I went, asked the questiom, first result is a question on a site called LaptopGPSWorld. Poster's name? UK_Vette..... |

using the phone works quite well- i have ti as a backup in case my wired version gives up
at the moment I am using http://linitx.com/viewproduct.php?prodid=10823
very accurate and quick to pick up satellites- doesn't come with any instructions and you really need a program called "sirfdemo" to reset the unit when it has very occasional glitches! |

Thanks 'vette. More places to glean information from...
Pugwash, I had seen that one. Just amazed at the prices. I bought one a while back of fleabay for about £20. works perfectly. Struggling to agree to pay nearly £50 for something that should not be. I'm on a one man crusade I'm tempted to reuse it but it's firmly attached to a camera. Would be a shame.
What issues do you have with it? Lockup? Failure to lock on enough sats?
Using the phone is an option but like you, I would rather it be an "incase"solution. My phone, Nokia N5, is not overly sensatie. Loosess a lock easily in a city (London) _________________ Cheers,

finally - my GPS arrived today. £2.60 off fleabay with £1.50 postage. A winner or what!
It's a bluetooth or cable jobbie and not waterproof but... I can either use it on the dash or hack it apart or...Wait for the next waterproof one (think that was £15) which has waterproof external antenna.
Thank to GPS gate, I can use them. _________________ Cheers,

Trying to advise a friend via email of the type of GPS he needs to buy to use with memory map AND Garmin nRoute, he has been told that this "maplin" USB GPS will work out of the box, could anyone please advise? Will he need GPSGate?
Protocols supported: NMEA 0183 v3
GPGGA
GPGSA
GPGSV
GPRMC
GPGLL
GPVTG

MemoryMap should be OK - note *should*
All Garmin products want to talk Garmin only, from my research. So unless the one he wants can emulate Garmin-speak, then he'll need GPSGate. At under £20, it's not too bad.

I use a normal NMEA GPS with GPSGate and both memory map and nRoute are happy with it. You can even use both at the same time should you so desire...
Like Gary said, at £20 it's not too bad.
No, your Maplin one will not work out the box for nRoute, memory map it should as it supports many protocols. _________________ Cheers,
