Just a thought.. as yours is import it may have a limited slip diff fitted, these can "grab" if oil in diff is old or of wrong type, one way to check if lsd fitted is to jack up rear so both wheels clear of ground, put transfer box into N , and then turn 1 rear wheel, if the other wheel turns in same direction then likely its a lsd. Try draining diff oil and replaceing with lsd compatible oil, it works fine in a non lsd diff so can't do any harm. |

another thought... if you have an electrical actuator on your rear diff, L/H side looking from front, then the lsd theory is out the window , as you have a proper diff lock , still if you can see the actuator it saves buggering about jacking it up to check. still worth changing diff oil though, SAE 90 , API GL5 , for lsd , you may have trouble finding a source, try motor- sport suppliers , used to get it for my much missed rally cars from them. |

You can get an additive to add to standard dif oil to make it into LSD oil. Jeep (Mopar) do it.
Ha, remember when I went to by a Capri 2.8 special that came with an LSD. Round tight corners it would clank and groan, which is normal, but I convinced the seller it was knackered and knocked the price down by £500. |

Changed the oil for limited diff oil.
Good to change oil anyways so not to bothered that it didnt solve the problem.
Wanted to see if the bearong nuts were loose like they were in the front.........
Well beacause she is used to launch boats the rear hubs are pretty rusty thus were not as easy to get off as the front.
i beat the hell out of them (couldnt get the hub off), realised i would need new gaskets, went to put the hub cover nuts back on...................
I broke a stud DOW!!!!!!
My intension is to take the hubs off this week and the barrel behind it (not sure what it is called) and get them shot blasted.
Please comment if you have any
Then weld a bar to the broken stud and replace it
One thing i have noticed is that when i pull from stand still, like at trafic lights there is a tiny clunk noise.
If i have my hand on the gear shift i can feel it move a bit forward.
(i bought a haynes manual) and it said the u joints may need checking and refurbishing.
Could this be the reason for the skipping? _________________ FZJ80 4.5 Petrol 1996 Import |

Its not the U Joint either
Im going to refurb the callipers (could be a sticky calliper grabbing when i turn hard)
If not next stop Toyota, see if they will have a go in my car and tell me if it is normal _________________ FZJ80 4.5 Petrol 1996 Import |

Just read this see website below:
I guess this is the skipping thing.................
http://www.gearingdynamics.com/workings.htm
Two major problems occur with standard part-time 4WD transmissions.
Drive train wind-up causes wheels to continually fight each other by skipping and skidding as they attemp to equalise the torque imbalance and differences in wheel speed.
The vehicle is pushed straight ahead during cornering and is therefore difficult to handle and control.
Front axle and rear axle continually fight each other to maintain traction _________________ FZJ80 4.5 Petrol 1996 Import |

Candice.
Only problem with this is that your vehicle has full time 4wd with a centre differential so you don't get the same problems unless you have the centre diff locked. I wonder if you have a problem with the centre diff?
The ones they are talking about on that site are part time systems but apart from very early HZJ80 and FJ80 models that had part time transfer cases, all the HDJ80, HDJ81, FJ80 and FJ81 models have been full time transfer case with post 92 models also having a viscous coupling in the back of the transfer box. _________________ 1999 Land Cruiser Amazon VX Active 4.2TD Auto

Candice.
If you get lots of skipping, lockups from the rear and the steering is as heavy as an old cart to turn then I would suspect problems.
FYI, my HDJ80 doesn't skip on the back with General XP2000 on the rear and some unknown make of tyre on the front - standard HT type tyres of 275/70/16 size. Steering is light and positive.
If you are feeling anything else I would suspect centre diff or one of the front or rear diffs locking on. Could be a stuck on rear locker - they are known to do this. _________________ 1999 Land Cruiser Amazon VX Active 4.2TD Auto

I always get the skipping when parking or turning on a tight corner (so only on tight corners).
I always go slow cause i am aware of the problem or go as wide as i can
It never skips in a straight line or any other time. _________________ FZJ80 4.5 Petrol 1996 Import |

Andy,
I have a front and rear diff with a transfer box in the middle
I cant see any actuators
I guess cause i am in perminant diff lock is this correct?
I hear no crunching when i turn
The steering is a bit heavy when i have the steering wheel fully locked
I havent been able to get the callipers off (i have been soaking the bolts in WD40) to aid getting them off. However as i have no breaking problems and it is hardley noticeable when turning the rear wheels when they are on axle stands i dont think this is the problem.
Any suggestions?
I have noted that maybe it is the tyres on the wagon _________________ FZJ80 4.5 Petrol 1996 Import |
