It is sad. I reckon pins would make more sense, how would you make them intruder proof?

Dunno, have an extra thick pin in the middle with a hole in the end big enough to put a padlock through when you're leaving it parked up? I bet most people would assume the pins were for show and not expect to open the bonnet anyway?

I'd go with that. And being from Salford one might be inclined to fit a loaded crossbow under the bonnet, just for safekeeping you understand. Or stick some current through the pins.

For info the Cape Town costs are for

1   Discharge of container from ship
2   Terminal handling charges
3   Moving container from the terminal to a depot and return of empty container (cartage) (You can't empty the container at the terminal)
4   Storage (at least one day even if you are at the depot as the container arrives and watch it opened.)
5   Lifting on and off the trailer at the depot
6   Taking car out of container after unlashing ( I drove it out)
7   Ship's agent release fees.
8   Cargo dues from the port authority
9   Customs examination and documentation fees.
10   Your clearing agent charges. (well worth having and small beer compared with the above)

Total just over 12,000ZAR (the exchange rate then was about £1=ZAR 12)

I don't know for sure because they were included in the freight charge and container rental, but the equivalent charges at Felixstowe would have been £200 - £250)

Most expensive are port cargo dues, cartage, and terminal handling charge. Most, but not all, of the charges include a VAT charge at 14%.

Ro-ro is a lot cheaper but less secure and you cannot ro-ro to Cape Town, would have to use Walvis Bay, Port Elizabeth or Durban.

For anyone planning the same trip I can recommend a clearing agent (very helpful) and recommend a consignee agent for the B/L to avoid if you can, but that may be down to the shipping company.

Oh! without a SA bank account, all the charges had to be paid in cash.

ps I like the pin idea, but better than a crossbow I would seriously consider a remote fire smothering system in future.

Remote fire containment would be an excellent idea.

That reads like the charges on an Easyjet ticket  Shocked
Agreed on the clearing agent. They are worth their weight in gold if you don't know what you are doing...
