I’m having a few problems with my electrics. The driver window seems to work intermittently, the cruise control has stopped working, and when using the automatic function on the ventilation system, a loud clicking emanates from the dash. This stops as soon as the A/C is turned off. The seat belts seem to have no inertia action, and at irregular intervals, emit a noise rather like the sound of a spring uncoiling.
As my electrical knowledge is dangerous, does anyone know of an auto electrician that specialises in Land Cruiser imports in the South West? I live near Shaftesbury, and Toyota in Salisbury have told me that they can’t do electrical work on imports, as the wiring is so different to the UK spec cars? I’d be grateful for any contacts anyone could supply.
Regards, Ian. _________________ 4.2 TD 12v VX AUTO |

Toyota UK are F.O.S ,why would Toyota Japan re-engineer a wiring loom to meet individual countries when a generic loom would serve all continents .The only difference i`ve found between my import and a UK spec ,is the rear foglights.I fix my defects(very rare) by trial and error and a haynes manual.
Try fixing it .you might surprise yourself .
There are people on this site with more knowledge than me and they had to start from scratch as well. _________________ BIODIESEL..Veg My Ride |

All 80 series have the same wiring loom. The only thing that differs worldwide is the factory fitted options for different markets.Thats why when you look closely at your loom there are unused plugs and connectors everywhere. _________________ Phil

Dealers can certainly do electrical work on imports, but in reality they don't want to.
If you look at it from their side, it's an old vehicle that may take a bit of time to diagnose, and any replacement parts are likely to be expensive, then the customer gets the hump when they see the bill. So as far as they're concerned, it's not worth getting into.
You can buy the official electrical manual, and then take a look at it yourself or get a sparky in, the manual will certainly help him as well, thereby cutting your bill. |

You will find that a lot of the electrical problems are due to bad connections in plugs that dry out and go high resistance over time. Happens pretty much on all Toyotas of early to mid 90s origin. Get yourself a Max Ellery Manual and find where the connectors are.
Drivers window is unlikely to be electrical - except if the motor is wearing out. Most likely to be mechanical - got the same on mine and just won a new motor for it on e bay. Works really well in nice hot sunny weather but as soon as it gets cold it works only occasionally and then with help from me pulling it up. _________________ 1999 Land Cruiser Amazon VX Active 4.2TD Auto

Many thanks for the replies chaps. Electrics are not my forte. 5 years into scratch building a 7 type car, and I'm on my second re-wire!
So back to my original post, if anyone knows of a decent auto electrician in the South West, I'd be grateful.
Many thanks, Ian. _________________ 4.2 TD 12v VX AUTO |

YOU WILL PROBABLY FIND YOUR PRPBLEM IS WITH THE CONTACTS IN THE MAIN DRIVERS DOOR CONSUL . REMOVE THE SWITCHCONSUL FROM DOOR AND OPEN IT UP. USE EMERY PAPER TO CLEAN CARBON DEPOSITS FROM CONTACTS AND REFIT . SHOULD BE LIKE BRAND NEW |
