I too have been experiencing the noise/squel detailed here under gentle acceleration, I tried "nordic venture" suggestion; with a 14mm spanner, the stretch of the spring by a few mm's and bingo the past 9 months of worry has been respolved in less than 5 minutes.

I created an account with this club/forum just to post this reply in appreciation.

I recently bought a 3ltr Prado TX which appeared to have the dreaded "squeal". I have just sorted it using Nordic Venture's fix. A really easy fix.

Hi all,

Good thread! Apologies for resurrecting it.
Having suffered with this ailment for a few months I tackled it on my 3.0TD this morning. So armed with a cuppa and a 14mm spanner I took out the 'bolt' but found there was no spring inside! I've had the beaut for 3.5 years and only noticed squel about 4 mnths back. I guess that there has to be a spring there or perhaps someone took it out before me! Any thoughts anyone?

Hi all, I've had this noise for the past two years but learnt to lose it by over revving the engine untill it shut up, but I've just sent the wife to buy some coffee whilst I find a 14mm spanner, wouldn't not want to follow the advice to the letter !!

Job done, but as this only occured intermittently I'll have to wait and see,Only issues I found were that the lower bolt was 17mm not 16mm also The wife didn't put enough milk in the coffee, so it was still too hot to drink when I'd finished, any ideas on how to sort her out I can't find any reference in the haynes manual or links on TLOCUK !

going to do mine next weekend along with rear pads ,discs and shoes and a service,it is quite an irratating squeal that comes and goes,hopefully next weekend it will be gone for good.

hi all just a few words on the mysterious noise in passenger footwell . i had the same problem (it drove me nuts) when i first bought vehicle and spent lots of time trying to trace it. anyway after reading many threads i came across the stretch spring fix and guess what its now completely gone all i needed was a 14m and a 17m spanner it took 5 mins and is a very simple job even for those of you who dont do a lot of own maintenance it seems that the ball bearing resinates when not under enough tension of spring and thats it . and as for mechanics saying they all do that its true they do. on my autodata it list common faults on engine as REPLACE FUEL RETURN VALVE NOISE AT 800 1100 RPM i replaced this as a matter of course and it made no differance whatsoever the new one was exactly the same as the old one regarding spring length so just give the old one a quick stretch and its job done!!!!

Brilliant. Worked a treat. Read this at work and fixed it in the works car park before the kettle boiled   .

As said before, 14mm and 17mm spanners required.

Hi Guys, sorry to ressurect this thread once again, could anyone tell me if the D4D engine has the same arrangement on the return valve. Mine has started making a very annoying squel when cold below about 1200rpm.I could'nt locate the offending bolt from the pic.  thanks in advance
