What's the deal with these company's who charge for a day's off-roading, eg Landale.co.uk ? Is this private land or is it public right of way that anybody can use? Apart from free recovery, what are you getting for your money ?

Frederick,

Quite a valid point. However, this needs to be split down into a
few catagories..All require that you have a full drivers licence,
insurance and road tax. For example:-

1) Pay and play sites.
Quite often run by a club or company or private person who let
their site, often dissused quarries etc, be used. They often
have several trails for various levels of skill. They are marshalled
and often include a tow out of the mud should you get stuck.
Most have a food van on site Laughing A fee is
charged for the use of the site and there will always be
a discalaimer to sign. Sometimes basic tuition is
available, free or at a small cost.
I have had many a good day at these sites, paying no more
than £20-25. A great way to learn quickly and often amongst
like minded people. Laughing

2) Offroading Companies.
A definative grey area. Some are very good and can teach you
a lot about offroading i.e. Handling, recovery etc...
Others, well, you pay your money and take your chances.
Of course they will make a charge for their time and services.
Also some Councils and Forestry commissions make a small
charge for running through their land. Check that this is included
within the total fee. Always ask what you are getting for your money
and they have some form of liability insurance.
Go for the reccomended ones. Remember, after all, they
are a Business. Shocked

3) Green laning.
The best and my favorourite. 1000's of miles of the Queens Highway
whithout tarmac Laughing Have you ever seen a white sign with the words
'by-way' ?- Follow the arrows and you will find out why Laughing Normal
road rules still apply. Speed limit is 10mph. The scenery is
however, breathtaking.
Green lanes are often denoted on the Ordinance Survey maps as
a line of red crosses. These coupled with the 1000's of miles of other
types of un-made up roads in various forms and you will have many
hours, days, weeks of fun. Laughing
Usually free but sometimes a phone call to the military is necessary
to check out access on the day. Salisbury Plain for example.
check out http://www.glass-uk.org/
Never go alone and even then make sure you take the basic towing
strap, first aid kit, food, flask of coffee, change of clothes and at
least a mobile phone.

I may be posting a green lane day soon to cover North Dorset and
Salisbury plain soon. You are more than welcome to come along
and find out what its all about. It will be free of course but at your
own risk.

4) Club events. Laughing
Always a good thing and well organised.
Keep an eye on this site and these others. Laughing

Hope this more than helps, albeit a bit long winded.
