Ive just bought a 1998 Colarado 3.0td GX LWB and the sony stereo has stoped working.
It was working fine when I picked it up but the next day it would not turn on.
Are these double din Sonys prone to problems? Is it worth fixing or shall I stick a single DIN cd player in?

Yes thats the one,
how do you turn it on because there is no on or source button just an off button.
I am trying to turn it on by pressing the tuner button,
although I have tried to press every single button with no success Confused

Aaghh well you are correct in pressing the tuning button, that is in effect the on button, so sorry i can't help any more except to say you can download the usermanual for free off tinternet, just gurgle sony & the model no usermanual download, at the back there should be a trouble shooting section, i would look at mine for you but it's at my work place.

Edit

Forgot to say these units are reliable & are in fact a very good unit, could be as simple as a fuse gone.

How easy/difficult is it to take the unit out of the dash?
Do I need to remove the surrounding dash trim?

Don't know how difficult it is to remove, i didn't fit mine but i know the surrounding trim does need to come off, if you've got the " wood " trim then this is very easy to break or crack so go very carefull.

Sometimes they do this, and generally can be fixed with the reset button - small hole just above the tape eject (well mine had one there anyway) - poke in a paper clip with the ignition on.

however it could be the fuse to the main ignition source - they have two feeds - one constant for the memory and one from the ignition - you may need to remove the unit though as if it has a fuse for the ignition feed it most likely is an inline one behind the unit.

If the reset button does not solve it,

Check the fusebox below steering wheel, some toyotas have stereo fuse under bonnet, so might be worth checking under there too. if the fuses are ok maybe pull out the stereo.

Remove the dash surround from the lower of the dash, ashtray area can pull out, maybe tease it with a panel tool, or a flat screwdriver and work up both sides past the stereo and the vents come off All in 1 piece, you can see the shape size of it easliy. , leaving the stereo sitting in the dash/ should be 8 screws around it philips screwdriver or socket should get them out and check fuse in the back

Refitting is the reverse of the removal as a wise haynes manual said once!!
