Ok i am going to make my own roof cage, got the design, frame dimension etc. My problem is what to make it out of and what wall thickness of materials to use etc. Alumminium is lighter, but is it strong enough? can anyone reccomend a grade or swg of material to use? or perhaps another material

purpose would be to carry 3 kayaks and prob some lighter items also

also i dont have any roof rails to fix this cage too, so i am not too sure  how to attach it too the roof. Iv had a look round for roof rails, butcant seem to find any for my rig  Crying or Very sad (1986 LJ71 SWB)

has anyone done bolted it straight to their roof?

any info would be greatly appreciated! in the mean time il just work on my home made snorkel  Very Happy

Direct4x4 sell some cheap roof bars that are just wide enough to reach between the gutters. One pair is fine to carry the weight of 3 kayaks but if you want to carry anything heavy or be able to stand on your roofrack while loading then you'd best get two pairs to be safe.

I want to make a roofrack out of ally tube when I finally get round to pursuading my boss we need a tig welder and a decent pipe bender. 2"x2mm wall would be my choice if I can find it.
