Looking for a quickish answer if possible.

Been looking for an 80 4.2 24V manual for a wee while now. Tomorrow I'm going to get a motor. The question is do I go for a 3.0 manual Colorado, 106000miles or an 80, 4.2 12V automatic with 170000miles.

The dream is to get a car to prep for Africa in 4 or 5 years but realistically it will be used more around the shoot and as an everyday drive; may tow the odd cattle trailer. Cost is the restraining factor at this time my budget being around £4k and the Africa dream may never happen if the Mrs doesn't get over her fear of flying things and snakes.

Realise that these things are never simple but any imput would be appreciated greatly. Also considering a 3.0 hilux surf................................please help me resolve my confusion :O)

Thanks guys,

fraser

Hi Fraser and welcome.

You're probably in the wrong thread group here but I'll help if I can.

It's not just down to the engine, they are very different animals.  There is a lot of info about both on here and the other forum but you need to decide what you want from the truck.  In the end, whichever you want, it come down to condition.  No reason why the 170000mile 80 shouldn't be a cracker my old one was fine but the 3.0 litre 90/95 could be as good for you and may be cheaper to run... maybe!

Sorry I can't be any more help but you need to decide what you want then buy the bet you can afford.

I was in a similar situation and got impatient looking for a reasonable 80 within my price range. I ended up getting a Colorado and haven't regretted it yet. It has slightly less load capacity and may not be quite as good in extreme offroad conditions, but it is very comfortable on my daily drive to work and back, and on the few times I've been offroad so far it has done everything that the 80's have done. Unless I got an awesome deal on an 80 (so that I could spend the difference to sort it out), I would get another 90 if I had to buy again.
