Different front and back tyres?

When I bought my lc120 from the dealer, they put new 2 new rear tyres on because they were pretty worn.
It has the stock Dunlop AT20s on the front (prev owner had replaced them) but theyve obviously saved some money and put Maxxis HT760 Bravos on the back 2. I gather these are about half the price!

I was reading the manual today and gave myself a little shiver... the manual states that unless the same manufacturer, size, tread etc tyres are used on all 4 wheels the vehicle stability control may not work.
Is this true?
I'm a little concerned as one of the reasons for the buy was safety for the kiddies, (and a bit of greenlaning). If this is the case, is this a trading standards issue?
Has anyone else had a similar issue?
I dont want the bloody tyres anyway and am considering some grabber ATs.
All answers appreciated.

i read somewhere that it's very important that all the tyres on a 4x4 are the same diameter as if they are different then they are turning at different speeds, not much but enough, and could damage the diffs, this is why they recommend that you change all the tyres at the same time and move the tyres from wheel to wheel regularly to ensure even wear.

Correct, the circumferance needs to be the same all round or you can get " windup " you can check this by taking a wheel off put a chalk mark on the tyre opposite the valve & on the ground, roll the wheel one full turn & mark the ground where the chalk mark on the tyre is, now measure the distance between the two marks on the ground, repeat with one of the differant tyres & see if there's a differance.

Speaking as a DSC (stabilty control) specialist - YES is the answer

On modern cars it's quite important, the roll, yaw & wheel speed is all measured, fitting odd tyres will certainly effect it to some degree, sometimes you wont notice it on certain cars eg Subaru's it very noticable & you'll have the DSC activiting in all sorts of strange unwanted situations.

An LC is not really something you want to lob around a wet roundabout to see if it works as it should or not! Manufacturers spend years & miles testing the cars & bunging odd tyres on wont help!


Its a damn clever system and currently the stats are its reducing the KSI rate greater than when seatbelts were introduced.

If you can afford to fit 4 (or even 5) new tyres of the same type at the same time, this gives the best results on most cars. On a 4X4 it is then best to swap them round at least once a year so that they wear evenly. This means swapping front to back one year then side to side the next. This may not get the most miles out of any one tyre but it does mean that all of them are about the same.

You have a problem if one tyre gets damaged and has to be replaced but if you started with 5 new ones, you can then go to a 4 tyre rota.

I have never driven a car with one of these stability systems so I can't comment on its effects and benefits. However, keeping all the running tyres the same helps ensure the car behaves itself.

Thanks for the advice again guys...

Emailed the dealer and customer service at toyota and upshot of it is, they will replace the front 2 tyres for.... 2 new maxiss. giving 4 matching wheels around the car. I guess I'll run them for a bit before replacing them.
Still disappointed with their attitude and service, but this should be the last visit to them!

t something I've everworked out but one thing if these sytems are that sensitive then you better make sure that you rotate the tyres. Fronts wear quicker on pretty much any 4x4 I have seen, and at quite a faster rate. fthe systems are going to be sensitive enough to not work with different tyres then they will probably not work well if you have say 10mm of tread on the rears and 5mm on the fronts. Makes quite a difference to the rolling circumferance that 1/2 cm.

Its what's listed in the manuals for them & something the dealers should be doing at service too. On some cars eg Porkers Porsche wont let you one new new tyre! Pairs or sets only.

I picked up an extra wheel on e bay.  Given that the fronts wear about twice as fast as the rears I plan to swap my fronts with my two spares every 10,000 miles or so.  I should end up with all six wearing out about the same time.
