Hi,
Sounds like a fuel starvation problem to me I'd be rigging up a different fuel supply  to pump and see if it still cuts out.
Drew.

Crystal ball needed on this one, or you can give us a few clues on model and engine.

initially, engine cut, no warning of any kind on the motorway.

was cranking fine but no start

so changed and tired after each change;
the fuel pump
injector driver
ecu. (now starting)
injectors reconditioned
pressure sensor on the rail
swapped crankshaft sensor (secondhand)

now starting and with rough idle, and cuts out in just under 3 mins

new type with one svc, which my mechanic says would throw its own code if faulty.  now considering damaged crankshaft sprocket or gear than is causing the fault, so is going to take the front off...seems unusual, anyone have this cause before?

 Faulty SCVs on these cars do not in most cases throw codes , the single type is troublesome and toyota have a replacement which is longer in body and is much better , check if yours has been replaced , if its the shorter one it needs changing to the longer type , I have never heard of damaged crankshaft sprockets on 1KD-FTV or Toyota engines , seems your mechanic has worked on too many German , French , Italian cars etc ,

It is possible to give out a code but many times they do not , the older upto 2004 lc120s have 2 scv a green and red connectors , 2004 upwards have 1 scv with greyish connector , scv are a consumable item and when worn still  do not give codes , but the 2004 on scv  can give trouble at any time and toyota replace it with a longer modified version which is know to be very reliable and last the life of the car   , so if yours is a 2004 on look at yours on the injection pump just below the fuel pipe that enters the pump that comes from the fuel filter and if it is only around 50mm long (not including the electric connector ) there is a good chance it is giving you problems , the newer modified scv is around 100mm long (not including the electric connector )  so twice the size .
