|

Hi everyone,
Has anyone else had a problem with oil leaks from the oil feed return pipe from the turbo?
I have a 3L P reg 1996 Prado import with around 186,000 km on the clock.
The leak has just been fixed for the 4th time now. Three times by a Toyota dealer (only charged me for one repair). Fourth time I was away on holiday and a local garage found by Greenflag fixed it with a new pipe and gaskets.
I'm just waiting for it to start leaking again, although I've towed a caravan over 200 miles yesterday and no sign yet.
Does anyone know what might have caused the pipe to fail so often please?
The dealership can't offer a reason, but at least they keep fixing it when it goes so can't complain about that.
I'm on edge driving it, as when it goes there is a trail of oil and a big puddle when I stop. Every time I park it anywhere I find myself automatically diving underneath to have a look for a leak, as habit now. Anyone I give a lift to wonders where I've gone when they get out.
I have to carry a container and rags around with me too.
Many thanks for any help.

Hi Paul, Sorry for the delay. I think it is a common fault for this part to crack and leak. When I changed mine which was leaking I couldn't find any obvious crack and I spent a lot of time looking!! But that aside when I changed mine I think they were copper gaskets and one part was very difficult to get at without removing the turbo (which I didn't do) as I recall the copper gasket kept moving dropping out before I could get it tightened up. Eventually did it and it has been leak free since. |

Thanks Bigoldbus,
That's encouraging. Since I posted it's gone again! Seems to be when I'm towing something, which is what I bought the vehicle for. I've booked it in at a Toyota/Japanese engine specialist on recommendation based in Derby. I'll let them know what you've said thanks. They've already assumed the turbo is moved and causing the pipe joint to weaken and leak. Hopefully they will sort it once and for all, fingers crossed, cause its a lovely thing drive- one of my favourite vehicles I've owned. I'm not really a vehicle enthusiast, its really just a good workhorse for me but I've had quite a few admiring comments about it from people and I'm thinking about getting the alloys resurfaced now - must be having an effect on me.
Thanks for your post. I'll post in a few months time after I've done some towing to see if it is fixed. The next thing is the rev counter which has never worked.
Cheers

Hi Paul, It is strange that it goes consistently when towing although that may be coincidence. It will be interesting to know the cause. I would make sure that the OE part is fitted (I got mine from Roughtrax and they identify on there site about the cracking/leaking issue) hopefully the recommended garage will resolve it for you, but please let us know how you get on. |

Thanks Bigoldbus for the advice. I'll check that they will be using an OEM part, and let you know how it goes.
Cheers. Paul |

Hi Bigoldbus
I've finally found someone who knows what they are doing and spotted the problem within seconds of looking.
It appears that a bracket holding down the turbo unit had not been bolted down at one end which caused movement between the oil return feed pipe and the turbo. The constant movement especially under load caused the pipe to keep fracturing below the flange at the top end of the pipe.
The specialist had no idea how a dealership garage could have missed the problem 3 or 4 times in a row. Why the bracket had not been detached remains a mystery. It was not bent or damaged and the bolt not sheared out of the threaded hole. It might have shaken loose I suppose on it own maybe, I don't know and will probably never know.
I took it to Powerhouseturbo in Derby. Brian the owner clearly knows what he is doing and charged me much less than the dealer too. He came on recommendation and I'm glad I took it there.
Give Brian a call if you have any problems I'm sure he will sort them. He also fixed my rev counter too which had not worked since I bought the vehicle.
I've just got to replace the aerial now (the motor it not working so its stuck) and there's something wrong with the compass which is stuck pointing north for some reason - I don't think the pitch and roll gauge is working either. I might have al look at replacing the unit if I can find one.
Thanks Bigoldbus for your interest in my issue.
Cheers

Hi Paul,
Great news, glad you have finally got it sorted.
Regarding the compass issue, I don't have that in my poverty spec!, but I seem to recall members on here a while back going through a recalibration (my memory isn't great but fairly sure I have seen someone go through a procedure for it on here).....may just be something simple like that rather than needed to replace.
Cheers. |

Thanks Bigoldbus
I think you drive around in a figure of eight or something like that and it's supposed to recalibrate. Tried that but it didn't work.
Still, I don't really need a compass these days, now we have satnavs etc. In 1996 I don't think I had the internet let alone a mobile phone, so it might have been useful then.
Cheers
