I'm currently doing a lot of miles on my 2005 Landcruiser. 200 miles south every Monday and 200 back every Friday. On Monday I did my usual halfway stop and the steering acted very strangely - like the steering rack had magically bent on the way down! Alternately hard to turn and then easy.

I checked the fluid whilst in the services and found nothing amiss. The steering was still a bit iffy but I continued for the second 100 miles - and the steering was almost as bad on reaching my destination. The following morning though - all was well - as it is this morning. So it just doesn't seem to like long passageways of motorway cruising?

Is this the first sign of the pump on the way out - and are they difficult to swap out?

Dave

Have you checked the belt tension, sounds like maybe it's slipping when warm.

Sounds very much to me that the uni joint steering shaft that connects to the steering rack is dry and partly seized or worn so gets very stiff when it gets to the dry partly seized or worn out position , try spraying the joints of the uni joint where it joins to the rack with plenty grease spray if its just dry link joints it will be OK , if its worn it will be feel OK for a short while then return stiff , but make sure you do not spray grease on the exhaust or turbo coz it is flammable when the turbo or exhaust get hot . hope that helps .

motorbike  chain grease spray would be best to use in my opinion  as it is clingy and still thin enough to get in to lube the joints .
