Put 6 in, then check where it is on the dipstick and top it up as necessary.

I have tried that and because the new oil is virtually clear and when pulling the dipstick out it just leaves oily smudge on the stick

Try doing it on an MR2. Virtually impossible!

Run the engine for a few seconds after putting 6l in - this will mix up the dregs of the old oil with the new stuff and make it easier to see.

I will dip it again in the morning before going to pick up the rather expensive hose  Shocked

I've just checked my Toyota Workshop factsheet (what they used to have hanging from hooks in the dealership's service bays in the days before computers...) and it says 7 litres for the 1KZ-TE. I don't recall ever fitting that much in on a standard oil change, but definitely a bit over 6l.
