perhaps a slightly strange question, but the water pump on my 80 series needs replacing and my local workshop says he can't do it, he doesn't have the tools, only Toyota dealers can do this. Can this possibly be right?

As usual you don't specify what engine and year you have, so do a Google search for info, also try YouTube   https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Land+cruiser+80+water+pump

well it was just a generic question, he said that he can't repair Toyotas because he doesn't have the tools. I can't imagine that it would make any difference whether it's a 1995 1HD turbodiesel or a 1990 3F-E petrol or a 2005 Camry. If he doesn't have the tools he doesn't have the tools. But why would Toyota have different tools?

I have no problem finding the pump, my question was why do I have to take the vehicle to Toyota? I've never had to do this before, regardless of the task. Although I've never replaced a pump before.

I looked at the link, someone, who presumably has Toyota tools, replacing a pump.

Sorry to hear you're not physic.

We still don't know what engine you are enquiring about, but I have looked at a couple of the videos, and have not seen any special tools that would be required.

Then I should probably go back to my mechanic and try and persuade him to use the tools he already has. Or find someone else...

Thank you.

Perhaps you've answered your own question - find someone else !
A generic question that maybe, but Andy has already asked for vehicle specifics for a reason, there may well be 'special' tools required, and someone could give you a more specific answer. The more details the better when asking a question !
I have changed the water pump on my lj78 no problems, and the one on my 120 doesn't look like it would be any problem either, so I can't see anything 'special' being involved.
There's several parts to remove/replace to get at it, so maybe that's frightened your mechanic off or he doesn't want the work.
Agree with Karl, - ask him, ...........or find someone who is interested.
Good luck !

Well I eventually asked him and it seems the tools response was a red herring, he's apparently short staffed and wouldn't have time to do it in the foreseeable future. Quite why he didn't tell me this first, I have no idea. Anyway, he sent me to someone else and they have the tools...

Thanks for update.
TBH, As he wasn't truthful initially, and his further response, I don't think he knows how to go about it, you're well off away from there.
Let's hope the new guy has 'special' tools like metric spanners ! 😀

Or maybe the only one to do any work was the dog?  I knew a garage like that once...

I think your mec-a-nanic must be a 'special needs' maniac, and have a 'water pump' phobia.
