Hi, I'm looking into a winding noise!! Though wheel bearing, front diff!!

The noise is only when running, moving,
So because of this, put it on axel stands and ran it at 10 mph ,,
We was able to stop the front wheels moving ??
No effort, could just stop the wheel with your foot ??

So quick question, is that right ?

I'm no expert on these things
I assume you had all 4 wheels off the ground ?

Most vehicles have differentials allowing drive to transfer power to the wheel that has grip , unless you have diff locks , also need to
take into account the transfer box that transfers drive between the front and rear axles

Are all the fluid levels correct ? is the vehicle very high mileage ? If you lay under the car and turn the prop shaft back and forth is there any play in the gear meshing before a wheel starts to move , ( car NOT running )

I was once asked to change the wheel bearings on a car as the had become noisy , after a road test I told the customer to remove the roof rack and all would be good , He then said Oh yes the noise only started when I put the roof rack on .

If you have the transfer box in 'H' (normal, open centre diff) you will be able to stop three wheels and drive will be sent to the one remaining wheel
If you have the t/b in HL or LL (centre diff locked) you will be able to stop one wheel on each axle, with the drive sent to the wheel on the opposite side of the axle
If you have a rear diff lock and engage it (only possible with the t/b in LL) you won't be able to stop either of the rear wheels

Drive always takes the easiest route, unless its prevented from doing so by locking diffs.

Thanks for the reply, and for being clear,
Yes I understand n remember a bit  Embarassed

So tired again, all fluids fine ,
Disconnect front and rear prop shafts, couldn't feel any bad spots turning,,

All I've had done is the clutch, 9 weeks ago, 700 odd miles
Has to go back in as they found the rocker arm needs replacing
They couldn't source one at the time!!!!

So all I can do is get that done, just to eliminate that!!

Noise still there , definitely not me roof rack ha
Milage,101k just,

Noises are very tricky to diagnose over the internet (and in real life!). Worn all terrain or mud terrain tyres are the go-to culprit, particularly cheapo remoulds in my experience, which can be fine for a few thousand miles then the droning can start - but really applies to all at or mt tyres as they get older.  However your clutch replacement sounds like an obvious suspect in this case. Was the pilot bearing replaced with the clutch?
