New member first post.
I have a 2005 LC5 with a defunct sun roof, the motor still runs but the sounds coming from it indicate the gears are stripped, any suggestions on sources of replacement parts or will i have to go down the 2nd hand replacement unit route? |

When I first got my 120 when I pressed the switch to open the sunroof mine sounded just like you persciped and would not open , so I pulled the felt lid back and got some to operate the open switch for the roof to go back while I pushed the glass back make sure you push it back evenly or it will jam if one side goes back (even the slightest) more than the other . When you get it to go back clean the channels and runners of any dirt and grit . Then spray generously some grease spay (use some good quality grease spray so that it stays on to lube the runners for a good while as something like wd40 or maintenance oil spray soon dries off quickly) both sides of the runners and tilt angles and wipe off any excess on the roof body sides and base so as not to attract dirt and dust . Then switch the sunroof to close while you pull it back with your hands (you can try wearing rubber washing up gloves so as to grip the glass better ) then open it again a few more times it might need your hands to help it , then check if it needs any more grease on the runners etc . It is VERY important that the glass roof opens and closes evenly on both side whilst it is stiff or the sunroof will jam and stop moving , once it is working fine to keep it working fine every 2 weeks open and close/tilt so that it stays lubed and working fine |

Thanks Tony I will have a look at that I am just a bit wary of trying it at the moment as I have a long trip coming up and at the soon it is watertight and I am a bit worried it either won’t go back or leak, also looking at it from the roof the drivers side rear edge has not seated back in & is lower than the other side making me think it might be a bit more complicated than a lack of lubrication. I think I will try your method after the trip. Thanks again I was beginning to think that no one had had any problems with the sun roof & it was just me. Parts seem to be as rare as rocking horse poo. |

It is not stuck closed just because of lack of lubrication . It is stuck because due to not been used for years and the lack of lubrication on the runner tracks are dry and the sunroof after been operated to open or tilt has moved more on one side than the other or tilted more to one side than the other stopping it from being able slide back or up . hence why it needs a helping hand in opening once it has opened a few times evenly on both running greased tracks with a helping of your hands with the running tracks being greased it will open and close and tilt without problems and the motor and gearing will sound smooth . I thought mine was the motor or the gears that were stuffed due to the noise it was making when I tried operating it as it refused to work at all and made the sound of the gears missing each other and the motor sounded like it was stressed . |
