Hello everyone. I've never owned a Toyota before but have joined the Forum as I was interested in the new Landcruiser and thought this Forum would be a good place to get information and advice.
Currently I have a Land Rover Discovery 2 which is used for green-laning (mostly in Wales) and TYRO trials as well as for daily use when the weather takes a turn for the worse. I've seen mention of a new Landcruiser and thought it looked quite nice and would perhaps offer the off-road capability of the D2 along with some comforts that the D2 lacks. I see the Forum is split by numbered series. Which series, if any, would the new Landcruiser fit in to? |

Hello Keith, I have just joined the forum also, as a soon to be first time land cruiser owner.
It doesn't appear many people are on here anymore, but from my research I can answer your question - the new (as in 2025 UK model) land cruiser in the UK would be the 250 series, which doesn't appear to have a section yet.
When doing research, it helps to look up the 'Prado 250' rather than 'landcruiser 250' as this is what it is called in most markets outside of the UK which is where it is more common.
I haven't looked much in to the 250 series, as it's way out of my budget (85k), however what I have read leads me to think it isn't all it is cracked up to be, or certainly doesn't appear to be worth it's price tag.
There are several Youtube reviews of it already, so worth checking out.
I know for me personally, I would probably instead be looking for a nearly new extremely low mileage 2023 '150' series for around 50-60k instead. |

Thanks Cameron. I have since done further research and watched a few videos and the major issue seems to be the diesel engine available in the UK is too underpowered for such a heavy car and very unrefined. The US get a 320HP petrol unit. It is also, as you point out, not a cheap car so a poor engine is not a compromise I would be prepared to make.
Which one are you going for - a 150? |

Yeah, I've gone with a 150 2.8.
I do agree that even on a short test drive, I did find the engine felt a little weak. It was more than sufficient around town, and even getting up to motorway speeds was fine - if just a little sedate.
Certainly, I have driven worse - and ultimately I decided I could live with it.
I know the newest models (2020 onwards I believe) were shipped with a fairly healthy boost in power, and other owners have re-mapped quite cheaply. But I don't think such a big heavy truck is ever going to feel fast without the larger petrol engines or a V6.
It's a shame they never fitted the bigger V6 (or was it V8?) diesel engine.
There are plenty of models on the UK market I see, imported with the larger petrol engine. I would have been tempted - however my concern would have been driving a car with an engine that was never sold in the UK might make parts availability difficult.
That being said, everything I have read indicates that the petrol is far more reliable anyway.
I wouldn't have said it was particularly unrefined though. Depends on what you're comparing it to though I suppose. Compared to my 2.2 D4D RAV4 I would say it is an improvement, and compared to older (circa 2005) 2.0L VAG saloon cars or an old Shogun I used to drive, I would also say it's an improvement.
I haven't had the pleasure of driving a big V6/V8 diesel before so can't compare there, but yes it is certainly less refined that say the latest JLR or VAG diesels. |

Is your 150 intended for road use only or will you go green-laning in it? |

95% road use including some unpaved roads and the occasional field. I would like to do some light green laning or perhaps take it to a dedicated offroading centre. It's not something I have any real experience with, but rather am looking to get in to from time to time. |

We've done the odd off-road session in the past, at Land Rover's place at Eastnor Castle when Jayne got her Freelander 2 and when we test drove the new Defender, and on holiday in Yorkshire just for fun. When we got the Jaguar F-Pace we thought it would be fun to try that off-road. We often stay at a hotel in mid-Wales that runs classic car tours (we have a Morris Minor), but they also do 4x4 trips so we told them what we wanted and they arranged a non-damaging, non-scratchy day in the F-Pace. They guided us in their Defender 110. We had a great time and the F-Pace performed brilliantly. 'Shiny roading' they call it. We bought a Discovery 2 shortly after that on the basis it doesn't matter if it gets scratched, and have done a reasonable amount of green-laning since then, mostly in Wales as there aren't many lanes around Worcestershire. I can let you have the details if you want. I was going to attach a photo but can't see how on this forum. |

That sounds exactly what I'm after! I want something that feels offroad, but is non-scratchy! Do you happen to have the details of the place you used?
Originally I started out looking for a circa 2006 LC that I wouldn't mind scratching up a bit but ultimately decided on the newer for peace of mind longevity so now I feel a bit more limited in my appetite for scratchy off roading. |

Replied to you there.
Did you end up buying something else instead in the end? |

No, I haven't. I will look further at earlier model Land Cruisers, but in the meantime I'm still using the Discovery 2 for green-laning and when the weather is bad, and the F-Pace as our day to day car. |
