|
|
I currently run a 2001 plate KDJ-95 KZTE-engined Colorado (European import) - since acquiring in 2015 the odometer is now up to 170,000 miles - it has been quite the most fantastic vehicle for my dog walking business and apart from having 2 flat batteries last summer has never let me down
My question is which J150 engine to go for next
Do I go for the (hopefully tried and tested) 3.0 D4D or the newer 2.8 litre?
Hope to retire this year and tow the caravan (1250 it’s) around uk and Europe
Any advice gratefully received |

I am in by no means an expert on the topic, I don't even own a landcruiser yet.
That being said, I am trying to buy one, in fact I have just put a deposit on a 2019 Icon (mid spec).
I have done an awful lot of research, and probably read just about every piece of feedback I can find online about this very question as I was asking the same thing.
the conclusion I came to, is that roughly half of people (who mostly currently have the 3.0) love the 3.0 and would recommend that - if only because it is tried and tested.
There is a significant number of people who say the 3.0 is likely more reliable as it has less electronics and emissions control. I am not sure how much I agree with the less electronics, as the D4D still has electronics, however the emissions statement is somewhat true, the earlier 2.8 from what I understand can suffer from DPF or EGR issues if not used on long journeys regularly, however a software update on the earlier models and a manual DPF clear button on the newer models appear to have fixed that issue.
There are also a group of people who argue the 2.8 is more reliable, because the 3.0 has issues with injectors, and piston cracking - which all requires regular preventative maintenance which can get expensive whereas the 2.8 supposedly has fixed this, and is just as reliable as the 3.0.
Performance wise, the 2.8 (pre 2020) produces power more or less on par with the 3.0, and the post 2020 models produce more power. Both 2.8 models produce more torque - although having driven both, I wouldn't say there are worlds between them.
A small number of people argue the 2.8 is more refined, and a small number report the 3.0 feels quieter.
Most agree the 2.8 is more economical.
The 2.8L is ULEZ compliant due to emissions, whereas the 3.0 is not.
In conclusion, after my research I decided that the 2.8 was for me, although I didn't feel I could go too far wrong with either. Another factor I took in to account in my decision process, is that the 2.8 is still in production and therefore parts availability is more likely going to be easier for longer (since I plan to keep my 150 for a long time). Also, being on newer vehicles, meant that finding an example with minimal rust became easier, and considering Toyota's 10 year warranty - a good chunk of my ownership will be covered with that extra peace of mind.
Hope that helps, sorry I can't offer any first hand advice - but that is a summary of everything I found online.
A harder decision for me, was pre or post 2018 facelift. I preferred the interior of the 2017 models, but much prefer the exterior of the 2018/2019. |
