Sorry to bring up a old thread but I'm having the same problem on one side. Where exactly are the earth's for the rear lights? Would a new unit sort the bad earth or is that further up the wiring loom. Thanks Alex

Hi I have a similar issue, were the brake lights are ok without side lights/beams on but when these are on one brake light will go off and the other will brighten as the brake light.
I know  nothing about wiring etc. how and were do I check if this is an earthing issue
Many thanks

For starters, just have a look at the rear light units and see if there is any obvious damage to the wiring, rust in the bulb holders, etc. etc..
The earth is through a wire in the loom I believe.

The rear light brackets in the bumper rot and fall apart, check them first. You may not need to get stuck into actual wiring testing if you see a broken wire that just needs repairing.
