The problem with this model is that you cant always tell that the big ends are worn even toyota say the only way to be sure is to look. The thing to do is to change them before any real damage can be done. The noise on your car Phil may not be related to big end bearings at all but like i said earler they can fail on cars that have done only 70k so no car is safe.Even cars that have had a full main dealer service history still have the same problem it is just a engine weak point.I think even if my car had done only 40 k i would still check them out for peace of mind.I know most low milage owners will think that this is a over reaction but once you know the facts and have a look around on the internet at other low milage failiers then they would think twice.

It's funny you should mention the exhaust, as I had stainless one fitted (well hammered to fit). A knowledgeable friend reckons it's just exhaust noise, and that it's quite often more noticeable with stainless ones. I got fed up replacing exhaust pipes so went for a Rimmer stainless with a lifetime warranty, though rimmers have now stopped making them, so the warranty isn't worth the paper it's written on!

I looked at the car at the dealers before he put the new front pipe on & couldn't hear the noise then but the old front pipe had a hole in it so it sounded like a jet aircraft!Might get round to checking the bearings eventually but I've still got some warranty left on it so if the engine goes pop he sorts it. It says in the Haynes manual that sump removal on the 1HD-FT also requires exhaust removal so is a bit more of a job than the older models.
