The 80 Series Diesel uses 24V starting but 12 v running. There is a starter battery circuit that switches the two batteries in series for the starter motor. All other circuits use 12V.

It's so that you can use a smaller and more efficient starter motor than a 12V one that would need to be pretty large to turn over the 1H engines.

I have a 93 4.2 VX with a starter problem. I started it this morning, but the starter kept running after I released the key.I then switched off, engine stopped running but starter kept running.Switched On/Off numerous times but still the same. Eventually had to disconnect both batteries to stop engine cranking.
I have not had chance to look yet but suspect starter solenoid tips have welded - has anyone come across this problem before? How is the second battery switched in, the starter is 24v whereas the rest of the electrical system is 12v? Does anyone have a wiring diagram?
Any help much appreciated.

Further to previous post - have now stripped down the starter. There are two coppor contacts inside the solenoid housing, one was like new,the other almost completely burnt up. I made up a new one from coppor bus bar and re-assembled. So far no problems - starter working perfectly ( but I will keep a 10mm handy just in case! )

My 4.2TD has two 12 v batteries. Is this right ? I was expecting one 12v and one 24volt. Haven't noticed any electrical or starting problems.

Yes that is correct. They work in series to the stater (24V) and in parallel for everything else (12V).

Phew... that's a relief and makes sense. Had wondered why I'd never seen a 24v car battery before.
