I came across this web site giving an overview of a long-ish trip across Africa.
It gives a good checklist of what to do, avoid, get and see.
http://dreamers1.com/africa/Africa-14.htm
I can't vouch for the validity of what is suggested but it looks like good stuff if you are planning a trip (or just dreaming about one!).

Not to detract from that report, but it's a tad old now, and nothing changes as fast as African politics - except maybe the roads!!
Here's a recent trip, that was really interesting to follow:
Visser Family Trip
They had some awesome adventures, and are now a real wealth of info in terms of expectation management.
One of my favourite bits is the start of the report:
"It started out as a 3 month trip to Moz, Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia - but soon we found our fingers tracing further and further along the map...
.... names such as Kigali, Wasu, Maralal, Lake Turkana, Marzabit, Harar, Awash, Lalibella, suddenly took on a new meaning. Our favourite during this time: while we're there, we might as well.
And by the time we got to Egypt, we found Libya and the ancient Roman ruins, Tunisia and a little dotted line on the map accross the Mediteranean to Italy. While we're there...." (SIC) - remember, English is not Jean's native tongue _________________ I'll be more enthusiastic about encouraging thinking outside the box when there's evidence of any thinking going on inside it.
