The Australians are keen on adding an LPG tank to their diesel LCs. It's a bit different to the use of LPG with a petrol engine. The LPG feed is about 10% of the diesel oil supply and only acts as a combustion enhancer.

The logic is that the small amount of LPG burns slowly relative to the diesel fuel, it is ignited when the first drops of diesel start to burn but it continues to burn until all the carbon particles (the last bits of the diesel oil) are burnt. This produces a cleaner exhaust and more power.

There are problems if you try to add more than 10% of the total fuel as LPG. The engine overheats, burnt valves etc. But it's a good way of boosting the performance of a diesel engine and the result is less pollution as well. Overall, the running costs should be less than on an unmodified car.

You can get conversion kits in the UK (try Tinley Tech) and you only need a 20 litre tank as the LPG is used to supplement the diesel fuel rather than replace it. But if you have an older diesel LC which is getting a bit smoky and down on power it might be a worthwhile upgrade.

If this sounds interesting look at:-

I don't know if the UK suppliers are as advanced as the guys in Australia where there are simple systems with a single point feed and sophisticated multi-point systems like those used on the latest petrol engines with links to the engine ECU for better control of the fuel supply.

You could also try running it on water / diesel mix.... see www.milesmoreonwater.co.uk
