I've seen a brand new engine run on engine oil ..... was being run for the first time at the factory and the turbo oil seals failed big time , the engine started to smoke badly so the key was turned off PDQ , trouble was the engine was now feeding itself on engine oil , the revs rose higher and higher ( have you ever heard a 6.5 litre diesel rev at 6500 rpm normaly 2500 v max ) ... it just reved more and more untill a rod let go with a bang ... well more of an explosion realy . repeat performance when the guys changed the engine and forgot to clean out the intercooler ... retail for one engine about 12500 K .
TBH while its a sound theory I would stick to derv .

These things would run on a mixture of used engine oil and Kerosene - but they only turned at around 300 rpm - and at 54hp from a single cylinder two-stroke semi-diesel of 11.5 litres they were hardly high-tech

I saw the exact same thing happen to a HDi at a dealership where I used to work, about ten years ago now. New engine out the crate - trashed!
