Hi All , me and my wife are going on a winter overlanding vacation to Kirchbach in Austria near the Italian /slovenian Border , visiting Reims /Grindelwald/salzburg enroute.
I am going in the 78's Landcruiser and want some advice on snowchains please as the snow will be heavy and carrying chains is a must .
I have 32/11.5/15 BFG AT's fitted .
I can see plenty of chains for sale for metric wheels ie some to fit 285/75/16( not much difference to the wheels on the toyota in Dia) i know this because i have them on my Landy .
was thinking of ordering them anyway as i can always use them on Defender if they won't fit correctly ?
the 32's are barely 10mm smaller in Dia .
can anyone advise me further please ?
Mark. |

Hi, its not just the diameter but the the allround size, chains do have quite a margin up and down sizes of the the size you buy, for example mine are for 305 75 16, but I've had them on 285 75 16 , it just means you take up the slack. My own opinion is to buy the best your budget takes you to, the square sectioned links with added "croustillons" take some beating, sad thing is I doubt if many of us will ever get to use them enough, mine have probably done less than 1k miles in 5years. IMHO the ones to avoid are the "get you out of trouble" cheapos which never seem to do the job or last. Have fun, best regards, Bill Westley _________________ 94 VX auto, lift and stuff, winch, inter cooler, BFGs,

the tyres are 32/11.5/15 , so i am guessing that's 11.5" tread width , the 285's i have on my Landy are 11.25" wide , as i say there's not a deal of difference in the overall size of both tyres so they metric snow chains would do the job , some of my mates use the peewag chains and these will last forever but are hundreds to buy . |

Now that the "Croisiere Blanche" has stopped there may be some good value used chains for sale, maybe if you post a wanted message on the relevant forums you may turn some up. When you actually compare the items the more expensive ones really do appear superior, when your driving icy slope and the chains are doing the business, you'll be happy that you acquired the correct items. I originally had good quality chains on 33x12.5 15 tyres on my hybrid, I was happy with them, I lost a chain in the snow and had to buy another, well a second hand set was available but a lot larger chain link, (double the weight) when I used these, I was really impressed with the difference. I would say that ANY chains are better than NO chains. Best Regards , Bill Westley _________________ 94 VX auto, lift and stuff, winch, inter cooler, BFGs,
