After trying to work out what my own truck was before buying, I though it may be useful for other members so these are the details i have found. I found details in loads of places including other sites, this site and a Toyota agent and i thank them all, however cannot list them as some were incorrect and misleading. Special thanks to member RoscoFJ73 who tried to help me in the first place.

If you find something that is wrong or could be added please post here or PM me and i will change or add it. It would be great if some members would post an image of their chassis plate and vehicle details so we can check them against the list to confirm its correct or to make it correct.

I have also found some Toyota codes that may not be available in Landcruisers.

Important: Spaces can be important and have a meaning but not always and all letters may not be present.

Its best to work out the letters you can confirm and then use the image to sort out all the details



Engine: (Nb. Can be single or double letters)

B= B, 2B, 3B, 13B-T
F = F, 2F, 3F, 3FE
G =
H = H, 2H, 12H-T
HD=1HD-FTE
HZ = 1HZ
L = L, 2L, 2L-T, LT/E
PZ = 1PZ
R = 22R
V =
? = 1KZ T, 1KZ TE, 1KD FTV

Vehicle Type:

J = Jeep, Off-road

Series:

2, 3, 4, 7 = Utility Vehicle
5, 6, 8, 9, 100, 120 = SUV, Wagon

Wheel Base: Normally, the second digit refers to the wheel base of the vehicle. However, in recent years there is many exceptions to this rule so this number specifies the model within the series

0-2 = Short Wheel Base
3-4 = Middle Wheel Base
5-9 = Long Wheel Base

Steering:

L = LHD Left Hand Drive
R = RHD Right Hand Drive

Body:

Blank space = Soft Top
V = Van, Hard Top, FRP Top
P = Pickup
Z = High Roof (60 Series only)
C = Side opening rear door
N = Boot lift up
G = Luxury Wagon
For the Japanese market the following are also used
W = Japanese market ordinary passenger vehicle, wagon
G = Japanese market small vehicle, wagon
HV = Japanese market ordinary truck, hard top
V = Japanese market light truck, hard top
K = Japanese market ordinary truck, hard top

Gearbox:

J = 4sp Manual - Column shift
K = 4sp Manual - Floor shift
M = 5sp Manual - Floor shift
P = 4speed Automatic - Floor shift

Equipment:

R = Standard
N = LX, GX
E = VX
V = RX / TX / ZX (May also be VX)
G = TZ / RZ / VZ

Engine Type:

Blank space = Standard
X = Turbo
U = DOHC, Carburetor
K = DOHC, EFI
E = OHC, EFI

Region:

Blank space = General Countries (Export)
W = Europe
Q = Australia
Y = Japan
K = Canada
N = South Africa
A = USA
K = Canada
V = Middle East

Package:

Blank space = Complete vehicle
3 = Cab or Chassis cab

Very useful .I used to have a link for this but lost it.
Only one I would disgree with is J=offroad. I believe it means landcruiser.All Toyotas whether its buses,cars or tractors have their own alpha code. For example 4wd Hiluxes are an offroad vehicle but have an"N" as their code.
They say the J was given to the 1st landcruiser from the word Jeep when Toyota tendered on supplying 900 vehicles for the american occupation of Japan(or maybe it was Korea).
The Japanese ,like the rest of the world,had no name for a 4wd at the time.

There are also designations for the petrol engined variants such as F= F,2F,3F,3FE.
FZ =1FZ(carbed model for 3rd world 80 series) and 1FZ FE.
There is also the "R" for the 22R engines used in the smaller light duty 7* series.
There are also the V and G engines used in the Prados/Colorados
And the Prado diesel engines 1KZ T ,1KZ TE and 1KD FTV
