Hi Just wondered if anyone has had or cured the poor reception that i seem to have with both my 1999 landcruiser 100 and previous 1995 4runner. They both had genuine  Toyota  electric aerials, a good earth and both are poor to say the least. Can anyone help?

I found that Toyota fit a pretty basic radio as standard. After 10 years they are often dying. Output gets poor because of the radio's amplifier rather than the strength of the signal.

Replace the radio. You can get a decent modern one for less than £100 with a connection for your MP3 player, a built in CD player and much better output.

You will probably need an adaptor to go from the new radio's standard socket on the back to Toyota's non-standard plug but that is available from Halfords and similar for around £15.

HI Willy. I threw the original radio away ages ago. I had 2 different radios not including the original on the 4runner, plus i changed the wing on which the aerial was mounted so made double sure it had  a good earth ect and it was still rubbish. Now ive got a lovely Landcruiser and the radio reception is still sh#t. im gutted.  Singhabeer

Hi there, sorry about the poor reception.

I don't have a good answer but I know there are two types of aerial for cars. It's all in the resistance figure for the aerial and radio. It can be 75 ohms or 130 (I think).

Most radios and aerials here in the UK are 75 ohm. However, if you fit a 75 ohm radio with a 130 ohm aerial or vice versa, you get poor reception.

If you have any documentation for the replacement radio, it may tell you what the aerial resistance is for the radio.

I am pretty sure most cars sold here in the UK have a 75 ohm aerial as standard. Elsewhere in the world where cars have short wave radios fitted the higher resistance aerial is normal but not here. However, you can get a 130 ohm aerial if you look around.

Hi , Thanks for the reply. I know both cars are proper UK spec cars, as in official imports so i will check the radio output. but thinking about it the Amazon has the original equipment installed. But thanks for the help. It seems that this is not as  common a problem as i first thought.
