What do you think, I am going to mount the solenoid in a waterproof box under the bonnet then put some remote switches into the cab, the remote plus will be mounted somewhere on the front grille area. The freewheel change over lever is easily accessed between the fins in the front bumper, hopefully get the winch in this weekend

Very nice.  Did you make the mount yourself?

The chances of getting a completely waterproof casing for the solenoids is remote. Better to use the standard cover and spray the solenoid/s and connections with a waterproof light grease. I don't recommend WD40 as it wont last and can catch fire.

Any container has to cope with the cables that go in and out and need to be sealed. If you assemble the box on a damp day you will trap in condensation. Better to use a semi open box and use the spray grease. My solenoids are in the standard Warn box in front of the rad. No problem after 8 years.

I am an electrical engineer and dont see an issue, just stick a small silicone bag in and job sorted. I will be using sealed glands and an IP65 rated box Wink

I work on the same principal as people who spend years trying to seal the ignition systems on petrol engines.

They see the light and fit a diesel.

Your missing the point.

There are two options.

Try to seal the system so that water doesn't get in, or change the system so that if water does get in, it doesn't matter.

It's called lateral thinking.

Roger.
