Hi everyone.
I have just bought a right old heap F reg FJ60, with 200k miles on the clock and not a straight or rust free panel in sight. I doubt it has had any kind of maintenance in the last 10 years and was filthy inside and out.
It needs a new driver side sidelight glass, fuel guage/sender unit and electric window motor/regulator and that is just for starters.
Toyota do of course still supply parts for it, but they are enormously expensive. Breakers don't tend to have many FJ60s in stock.
Any ideas?
The thing stinks of old oil and the smell is so strong in the cabin that I suspect an entire sump has been emptied onto the carpet, but it could be coming from the engine bay. Has anyone else experienced this and if so, how do I get rid of the overpowering smell? I had thought it was just because it was so grubby, but now I have cleaned it and taken out most of the carpet, it is almost as bad.
On day one, it coughed and stalled. I was told by the previous owner to pump the manual pump until it was hard and then twist it back in. It worked and no repeat yet (day 4), but it has clearly happened before, so what does this mean? Airlock? Do I need to take the tank off, change filters and bleed it all back up again? Not a nice job. |

Richard,
It sounds like you need to give it a complete service including oil & filter, fuel & air filter, gearbox, transfer box & diff oils.
Is it Petrol? because if it's diesel it's actually an HJ60.
You will find these 2 suppliers very good, 1 is in the states & the other is in the uk, don't forget that if you buy anything from the states make sure you find out the carriage charge & tax's that apply. Unfortunatly most of the parts that you need will have to come from a main dealer.

As for the smell get those carpets & interior clean. Perhaps drive the vehicle around without the carpet for a while & get underneath & try & find where this smell is coming from or leak!! I can't imagine it's leaking in the cab though. Maybe something leaking onto the exhaust or into the bell housing from the rear main oil seal....how's the clutch???
Regards
