Hi, I am having the auto box serviced and have a problem getting the correct filter assembly. This set me thinking as to which countries had the option of the 3.4 engine? Can parts be found in these?. Also are there any known specialists in the Uk for this engine? Any help much appreciated.

I have the 5VZ-FE (3.4 petrol V6) engine in mine. It's been an extremely reliable engine so far and is now on 196,000 miles. Routine stuff like filters and spark plugs are a available everywhere and that's pretty much all mine has needed. I really need new valve cover gaskets to cure a minor leak and they are proving tricky, lots on e bay but I'm not convinced they're any good. Toyota dealers probably can get hold of them (it's remarkable that they still support such old vehicles so well) but the cost is high.

I'm going to give Rock Auto in the US a try, they have a great website, ship to the UK and the 5VZ-FE is ubiquitous over there in Tacomas and Four Runners. Lots in Australia too but shipping costs prohibitive, a pity as they do great exhausts. Exhaust parts are in limited supply and expensive.

For service stuff here I use Roughtrax, Opie Oils, Amayama and Euro Car Parts (only if I have to).

The cambelt is non-interference btw so no disaster other than being stranded if it busts.

Toyota main dealer fitted a new cambelt to mine, if i recall correctly under £300 all in, which i didn't think was too bad.
So long as you maintain them i think the 3.4V6 is one of the best engines Toyota has ever made.

Interestingly when i was considering getting a 120 imported direct from Japan (rust free chassis), i found lots of 120's were fitted with the 3.4 engine and some 4 runner type versions of Hilux too, parts shouldn't be an issue but you might have to wait a while for rare items to get here.

Thank you for the replies. Roughtrax came up with the autobox filter, great people to deal with. I will look up those American contacts , sounds promising.  The engine may be common in Japan but using Amayama for bits seems risky going by the reviews. If you import a vehicle from there they may be rust free, but I believe they are not rustproofed for our climate either.  I think the 3.4 is a terrific engine and will be keeping mine going for as long as I can !

I got the gaskets from Rock Auto; two cam cover gaskets (which are identical on both sides interestingly), six spark plug tube gaskets and 16 cover bolt washers. Cost was about £32 for the kit plus £20 postage; came in a week via Fedex and no customs duty to pay. They were very good to deal with.

For anybody attempting the job ignore the Youtube guides which suggest you put the circular plastic cam end covers back in without any sealant - mine leaked profusely like this and I had to do the whole job again and seal them around the full circumference. Also make a careful note of all the vacuum pipes, second time round I missed a tiny one at the back of the upper plenum and ended up with an 1800 rpm idle until I found it.
