Hi to all

As I am not so good with electrics I wondered if you could help.

Problem with headlights.

Both headlights light up but when main beam is selected from column stork there is no main beam and both headlights go out. Same if stork is moved other way i.e. no main beam flash and  both  headlights go out. The blue main beam light on dash does not illuminate either.

Guess its going to be either the Headlight Control or more likely the Dimmer relay not sure which?

Are these relays only avalable from main dealer?

Any ideas would be appreciated thanks.

Martin

The headlights come on, but when I select high beam the headlights go out i.e. other than side lights there are no headlights unlit I deselect high beam when the headlights (low beam) come on again..

Cheers

i,v a 100 ...but the main beam and hightbeam or 2 differnt bulbs ..when one's on the other one,s are allways off there never on both together
so your problem is your hightbeam isnt working not that your main beam gose out if that makes sence

As always thanks for your help.

Took the Headlight Dimmer Relay apart applied 12v -  contact poor. Took off the small spring, cleaned up (and slightly bent forward)  the contacts  and switch restored. Saved £40.

Cheers

Don't you just love fixes like this. I little bit of time, effort and ingenuity and you save yourself a packet! I guess on a new vehicle the relay might well be one of those sealed unit jobbies that you can't get into. Yet another benefit of running an older car.

Great collective advice on here always very worthwhile.

I was also amazed how well made the internals of the relay were. After all it has covered 16 years and 173000 miles. After the clean up I am guessing it would be good for the same again.

Just wondering what you would recommend for an alternative set of brighter headlight bulbs than standard withouit the need for a wiring upgrade.l

Thanks to all

Martin

The Halfords +80% bulbs made a big difference to mine.

Philips, Osram and Bosch make the best stuff, period, with the former two probably the best. Nothing in it. Expect to pay about £20/pair. Or do a HID upgrade.

I've used what Dwels suggests above. Big improvement without breaking the bank.

Or if you want a huge difference but remain miserly, try these;

I have been using these for four years now and two have blown in that time. But at that price, who cares.

Allways amazed at how quick they are delivered. I also got the ones for Tommo's headlights and spotlights from the same people.

Thanks for the replys.

I notice the e bay ones mentioned above by Les are HID 100w - presumably my 1993 standard wiring will cope with the much higher output?

Any legal restrictions - they say blue?

Thanks

Martin

When I used them on my Disco I had a burn out of the wiring and had to uprate it.
With the 80 I have never had any problems.

Yes they are illegal but I have never been pulled for them and I drive into police stations
and road policing units every working day.
So long as the headlight aim is correct I doubt there will ever be an issue.

Even at 100w they are not as bright as the Nissan Tommo used to have with the HID lights.
