Hi Karl,

I've ordered (hopefully!) a two button key, cut to Vin number from Car-Keys-Online @£67. Thanks for the contact. Although I hardly ever lock the car, with increasing age and forgetfulness I fear there will come a time when a second spare will be needed.

I don't lock the car because I am well off the public road and have an outside loose dog, although about 20 years ago (between dogs) a thief walked across the fields and stole camera equipment from my unlocked car, on reporting to the Police (with address of guaranteed culprit), they did nothing but said it was my own fault for not looking car and to check local car boot sales!

About 6 months later the thief returned, broke the  door lock on the locked car but there was nothing of value in the car. the dog barked & the dog with my son, followed the scent all the way to the thief's door. Since then I just take the key out but not lock.Te thief has sine moved.

Hi Karl,

Ordered Key from Tyneside Autos Ltd on Sat, arrived today, key cut to Vin no, so no problem there.

Key will operate door locks, and windows if switch on, but engine will not fire up and remotes don't operate.

Tried to programme the transponder using the old 2 button key and two different versions of the 'key on & off and doors open and closed' sequences but without any success.  Are there different versions of this for different models of TLc do you know?

Seem to be getting nowhere fast!

Hi Dafydd,

Great that you got the key cut and the blade works ok.

Obviously the remote needs programming and the transponder needs registering with the car.

Can you point us to the procedures you are using?  I remember they are quite tricky and some of the actions are open to interpretation, which can result in it not working.

I'll also try and dig out the instructions I've used successfully!

Hi Dafydd,

Try to program the transponder first.  You have to do these steps pretty quickly one after the other.  I dont know the timings, but you cant leave minutes between steps.

1. Start off in the car with no keys in the ignition and the doors closed.

2. Put the original key in and out of ignition 5 times.  Finish with key in the ignition.  So that is:  IN OUT, IN OUT, IN OUT, IN OUT, IN.

3. Open and shut drivers door 6 times.

4. Remove original key from the ignition and insert new key.

5. The security light on the dashboard should be flashing.  Leave for 60 seconds, the security light on the dashboard go off.

6. Take the new key out.

7. Open and shut the door.

Then put the new key in and try to start the car.

If that doesn't work, let us know which step fails.

If you make a mistake part way through, put the original key in and start the car, then remnove the key, open and close the door, and start again.

Good luck!

Hi Karl,

The first version is a post by  TOAFRICA  on  30/4/09 in 'Alarms, Immobilisers and Keys' section, in reply to a question by  4RUNNER.

The second version I don't remember exactly where I found it, but undoubtedly on this site, sometime last year. Briefly it says :-
Open drivers door,
Put original key in & out of ignition twice
Shut & open door twice
Close door
Insert key (new one??) turn on
Turn off & remove
Door locks will cycle
Press lock & unlock together for 1 second then lock button
Locks will cycle, put key in ignition turn on & off
Remove key, close door & test.

As I said, neither work, despite several attempts.

just seen your reply, which came through as I was typing mine.

Your sequence is almost the sae as that of TOAFRICA, except that he specifies 7 door open/shuts??

Ill go and try 6.

Hi Dafydd,

Im not sure the TOAFRICA post is for programming a 120 key, so Id ignore that for now.

The sequence you posted there is for programming the remote buttons, and looks similar to the information I have, but *not exactly the same*!

Try and do the transponder first, as thats the easiest one.  if that works, I'll post the info I have for the remote buttons!

I think the TOAFRICA one is for a 90 (colorado) rather than a 120.  They must change it a bit for different models!

This is becoming quite a saga.

Success,  doing exactly as you list, and the engine now fires up.  Another difference in TOAFRICA's instruction is that he says turn the old  ignition key on and off whereas you say just insert and withdraw it.

Anyway, after trying various combinations following your instruction to the letter worked. One peculiarity, I had the drivers window open to allow faster door operation, and now the windows work without a key!

Thanks Karl,  progress.

Now, what about the remote locking, though I rarely use that if its a complicated procedure.

Hi Dafydd,

From your procedure above, make two changes:

1. Use the old.key (in the step that says new) - and turn on means start the ignition

2. Remove the CLOSE DOOR step

Hope that works.  If not I'll post the full steps (when I get back to a computer!)

Hi Dafydd,

Just checked and the procedure I have is a little bit different.  Here it is:

1. Open Drivers door

2. Put original key in and out of ignition twice - IN OUT IN OUT

3. Close and open drivers door twice

4. Put original key in and out of ignition ONCE (do not turn on)

5. Close and open drivers door twice

6. Close door

7. Insert original key and turn ignition on

8. Turn ignition off and remove key

9. You should hear the door locks cycle

10. On the new key press the lock and unlock button together for 1 second, then press the lock button

11. Locks will cycle.

12. Put the old key in the ignition and turn ignition on, then off

13. Remove key from ignition.  Close door.

Test new remote!

Good luck!

Many thanks Karl,

Just seen your reply, it's dark now so will have a go tomorrow when I have time. Will have to print out as I'll never remember all of that!
