Hi

I have a 90 series LWB D-4D automatic.

I've had it for about 6 years.

For the first three years it would tow like an train. 2ton caravan in the hot summer in the hills f the dordogne 35degrees - not a peep. Fantastic.

Then I had the rad 'go'. Specifically the ATF cooler inside the rad 'went' and the pressure from the hot water rad forced engine coolant into the ATF box and made litres and litres of the dreaded 'pink goo'. It was everywhere and there was so much of it and the pressure was so high that it even came out of the ATF pan gasket between all those little bolts that clamp it on.

I put on a new rad then drained, refilled, ran, drained, refilled, ran the ATF box over and over. I did it like 5 times to get all the goo out and replace it with good ATF again. . I have since changed the ATF fluid at least twice.

After that it ran fine - much to my surprise the automatic transmission was as smooth as silk, would shift beatiful, didn't keep using oil or leaking oil. Drive around all day no issues.

Couple of years go by then I towed a big load again.....

It overheats on hills / slow speed runs with a big load - 2 tons - where it used to be fine. It can tow the boat which is 1 ton still with no problems. But 2 ton caravan - in hilly country terrain - gets too hot.

So I don't quite know what might cause that and the fix.

I used an aftermarket rad - is it not as good?

Is the gearbox still bunged up with pink goo? The ATF is clear.

Should I be thinking of some kind of 'flush' for it?

How about an axtre ATF cooler - there is plenty of space in front of the main rad that is could go...

Any inputs welcomed.

Thanks.

C

Does the vehicle have a cooling fan ? If it does is it electric fan cooled or does it have a viscous coupling

Its ‘stock’ factory - no wires so viscous I suppose.

Could be that coupling faulty and not engaging the fan when hot

I don’t know.. the fan blows like mad the whole time the engine is running even when idling.

Good point Al, viscous couplings can 'lose' the 'oil' on older vehicles which have a big effect on the fan kicking in.
They can be topped up by dismantling, but it's not like topping engine oil up, it's a special oil commonly used on remote control models and done in cc's and by eye when in two halves.

If you say the fan blows all the time it must be electric

Did you buy and fit the replacement radiator ? It may have been a cheaper alternative and not the same quality as a Toyota unit

Yes. I bought it from milners off-road - defo not an OEM unit.

Yes I fitted it.

That could be the reason. I would like to say milners stuff was always good but I have since had replacement rear light units from them which have been poor….
