Hello everyone,

I am trying to diagnose a no-start on a 1993 3.0 TD 1KZ-TE A/T Prado (model KZJ71W), RHD from Japan.
ECU is 89661-60250
175800-1292   (3-plug)

I hope this is the correct sub-forum.

I received the vehicle in a fair bit of shambles. It cranks over fine, but no catching at all. Not even a cough or fart. So I began checking things over. First thing I noticed was that the fusebox label (on the back of the fusebox cover) by the drivers door indicated a slot for a glow plug fuse, but there were no wires/leads even going to that slot, and so no fuse to check. I also cannot see where the glow plug indicator lights are supposed to be... nothing is lighting up for a short amount of time when I turn the key to on before cranking. The other dash lights light up on the gauge cluster as expected.

I also noticed a tiny bit of diesel fuel leaking on the top of the injector pump on the side of the engine block. So it seems to be getting fuel from the feeder pump.

My first instinct is to continue to check that the glow plugs are working... any pointers as to what to look for would be great.

Use a 12volt trouble light across the glow plugs, turn on ignition, should light up for a few seconds and go out if motor is not started. or check fuel shut off solenoid at rear of injector pump.

Between glow plug wire and ground, with ignition off I have continuity, and with ignition on I get only .2 volts which seems to stay there indefinitely, engine just cranks endlessly.

I think these have a fuel cut off solenoid on the fuel injection pump. When you turn the ignition to ON ,you should hear an audible "click"
If not ,it is ok to run a jumper lead to the positive terminal to the solenoid

I think my first priority needs to be to determine firstly where both the check engine light is (it's not coming on and I don't know where to look) and the glow plug indicator light is also not seeming to come on, and again I don't know where to look for it either... :/

Jumpered E1 and TE1, no flashing light anywhere. Checked power at TE1 and TE2 with ign on, and both have 12v.

Checked glow plug relay, it checks out when tested on its own.
Srel output at the ecu is showing 12v and holding it for a minute or more with ign on.

Can anyone clarify for me that the glow-plug light, or pre-heating circuit light, is the one located on the bottom of this two-light combo to the right of the steering wheel? It does not come on at all:

This is my instrument cluster. Where can I find the check-engine light, for blinking fault-codes? Thanks guys, I really appreciate any help!

The lower light on the R/H Side of Steering Wheel, it should light up for approx. 3-4 seconds as it is a quick check that that ECU etc are working.
I have been working with my own Prado, NO Check light working, NO power to Fuel Shut off switch on injector pump, NO Fuel at the injectors, Changed the ECU Box and it fired up  Very Happy

Yeeeaahhh I'm beginning to think the ecu might be toast... but I'm hoping for another quick and easy solution that presents itself :/
Thanks for that.
Anybody know if a Granvia ecu (same engine) could work?

The lower light on the R/H Side of Steering Wheel, in your first photo, it should light up for approx. 3-4 seconds as it is a quick check that that ECU etc are working. and the top light is for water in the fuel filter.

Oh I misunderstood... I thought that was the glow-plug indicator (sure looks like it). So where is the glow-plug indicator light, and why is there no glow-plug fuse in this model in the driver kick-panel-fusebox?

Correction: The following symbol (the bottom warning light) is indeed the glow-plug light. It never comes on in my Prado, as is also the case with the check-engine light (which I have not located yet) during diagnostic mode or startup.

Thanks andy,
trying to get it downloaded. I already had the 1KZ-TE manual (although not quite the same vehicle application). Owner's manual would be good too.

The IKZ-TE ecu also had some modifications - what looks to be extra wiring linking certain parts of the ecu to others. As a guess, mods of this sort are usually to allow things like extra boost etc. I'll try and get some pictures up, and see if anybody can recognize what they were trying to achieve. The vehicle was operating/running fine, and then one day just no start.
