Hi All
Im a newbie here so please be kind Very Happy, I have a 2004 Landcruiser LC5 3L diesel D4D 5 speed manual
2 weeks ago there was a loud bang and I lost all drive. When i lifted the clutch in any gear there was just a gratering noise like bits being chewed!! Off to the garage it went hoping the clutch had shattered, but no its looking like the gearbox.
Im really struggling to find the correct gear and transfer box with the actuator on the back, and was wondering if the LC4 or LC3 gearbox would PHYSICALLY fit, I know there is a difference with the diff locks but Im honestly not bothered if the diffs lock or not.
I dont go off roading anymore, and just tow my caravan.
Would this fit and work? As long as it drives and selects hi/lo IF required would there be any other probs?
The reason i want both boxes is that when it was out I went looking in the transfer box first to see if anything was obvious, unfortunately the cover was that tight it cracked getting it off!! Believe me I was being gentle. Then when I opened it up 2 big circlip looking things, 3 little metal blocks and a brass plate fell out!! They were'nt mangled so just assumed I had disturbed them, but dont know how they go back so if anyone has a gearbox diagram exploded view that would be great.
I love my car just had new wheel bearings and timing belt done then this happened so really stuck, if I cant get a fix Ill have to scrap it and I really dont want to do that. PLEASE HELP
Many thanks
Glyn

A rare spec indeed, LC5 with a manual box.

I can't see there being any problem fitting another complete gear and transfer box from another 120 series, whether the front/rear diffs lock or not shouldn't make any odds (they do on LC3 if i remember correctly because it lacks the sophisticated traction controls of the higher spec models), they all have low/high inside the gearbox and they all as far as i know send drive to the front axle via the transfer box, never heard of a RWD only Landcruiser though they might exist for special order as did some series LandRovers.
Obviously you'll take lots of pics and all appropriate measurements and mounting points of your present box and double check those when you go to collect another box.
Though the automatic box was changed around 2004 from a 4 speed to a 5 speed unit, i'm not aware of the manual box being changed during 120 production run, hopefully if such is the case someone else will chime in.

Note, i have no idea if the bell housings are the same if the donor car is a petrol engine, can you get a manual with the petrol engine even?, and i don't know what if any differences there might be if the potential donor car is a Japanese market Prado.

Also remember, even if it fitted a Hilux box would not have full time 4WD, so doubly make sure the donor vehicle is a 120...an interesting concept though, the FJ Cruiser though basically a 120 underneath had if i recall a similar set up to Hilux, RWD for normal road use with the front axle receiving drive once the centre diff was locked, so presumably the difference from the base 120 is to be found in the transfer box? i suppose its possible if you wished to experiment to give your 120 selectable 4WD using a box from a Hilux 3 litre....ignore this sentence just thinking aloud here.

You obviously need another transfer box as the casing is ruined, bad luck that, but it might be worth getting your present gearbox checked out by a gearbox specialist in case it only needs a few new parts to make it right again.
