The sump is right over the front diff and axle and looks fairly tight to get out. I wanted to inspect the oil pickup at the last oil change but you cannot see anything through the drain hole, so the only way is to take the sump off.

Do I really need to remove the front axle to get it out? Or is there a simpler way?

Surprised its not visible, it definitely is on the 120.

Inspection camera maybe. But suppose its clogged I'd still need to get the sump off, so interested to know the best way of doing that.

yes, the front axle has got to come out if you want to remove the sump.

I used the camera on my phone with flash on my 120 d4d, through the sump plug hole, shows perfectly.
It did need need a few goes to centralise it though.
Sure, if the pick up/strainer is clogged you will have to take the sump off, BUT if it's not, you have saved yourself a whole lot of work !
Whichever way you still have to drain oil, but If you go the easier route explained, try and let the oil drain overnight, so you dont get any drips on lens.

On the 95 its different, you just cannot see the mesh surface of the pick up at all. Also looks like on the 120 there is sometimes a mini-section of the sump that can be more easily removed without having to take the whole thing off.

WOW !!
Sounds like a poor design flaw in the earlier d4d, ironed out in the later version.
As suggested by Karl, inspection camera/snake then but may still be unaccessable due to angle ?
A whole lot of uneccessary work for sure if you have to remove axle, have you looked into putting chassis on axle stands, letting the suspension hang, slackening engine/gearbox mounts and jacking front of engine at crankshaft pulley with suitable protection to increase angle of engine. A bit less work, assuming that will work on a 95 ?  Good luck !

No, but sounds like the sort of thing I was hoping to find out.

What about the front diff, can that be unbolted from its mounting to allow it to hang down even further?

On the front end I need to replace brake discs, change diff oil, and possibly replace lower ball joints, so maybe a bit of a front axle rebuild might be in order anyway.

IIRC there have been a few threads here and there on how to get to the position of getting the sump to drop enough to clear the strainer, then slide out. What the exact details are I can't remember. Maybe do some searches on the various forums ?
Having said that, with the work you are proposing, it may well be worth removing axle in the long run anyway, even though they can be done with axle in situ.
Be prepared for seized nuts, bolts snapping etc, so soaking all bits in advance with plus gas or similar well before would help
