2001 Colorado D4D.  Getting a very pronounced knocking through the steering column over short, sharp bumps.  It is fine on the road and off road except when going over those kind of 'cobbled' sections where there are frequent, small sharp bumps - these knock like hell through the steering column.  It can be felt very directly at the steering wheel.

Mechanic thinks I need to replace steering rack, track rod ends suspension arm bushes - suspects play in these is the culprit. As the rack leaks and the other issues are MOT advisories I'll probably do all this anyway.  But my feeling is that the knocking is more likely in the steering column itself.  There's so knocking or play when turning the steering wheel - it is only over those multiple wee bumps.

Thoughts appreciated guys.

The first thing to look at is the rack bushes, when worn they produce a knocking from movement, either originals or available from Milners as aftermarket ones.

Ordered a new rack (old is leaky and worn) from Milners which comes with bushes and track rod ends (they're needed anyway). Fingers crossed.
Could it be an issue with the steering column e.g. slip joint or another joint?  I've asked the mechanic to check out column when the rack is off.  Anything else to look at when they're in about that area?
cheers and thanks for advice
