When I turn off the ignition an alarm sounds in the dash, rather like an annoying alarm-clock. It happens whether the engine has been running or not.

What does it mean?

It a Japanese Import if that is important.

Anyone had this problem before?

The car was sat for 5 weeks but fired into life with no hesitation whatsoever.
Runs a treat just got this annoying alarm.

Does the alarm stop when you actually remove the key? My new van does this,I guess it's just to remind you not to leave the key in the ign.

Could be the sound you get when a window or sunroof is left open?

Nay, the alarm times out and has never gone off with windows or doors open.  Just started happening after being sat un-used for a while.

Thanks for the replies,I just hope it doesn't mean anything terminal for the truck or anyone in it's way...

OK, not an 80 specialist - but there is a common alarm on many Toyotas associated with the Sony radio / CD. Does the alarm sound like Diddle Diddle - Diddle Diddle? If so, it's to do with the front panel being left on or something. I've had 3 and my mate's Hilux is the same. Doesn't do it if you pop the front off first.

OK, 'tree, wrong, barking and up the' spring to mind perhaps. But other than lights left on alarm, it's the only one that I know of in a Toyota

On my 80, not an Import, if you leave headlights on and remove the key, you get a continuous beep when you open the door. You can test this by just opening the Drivers door and turning the lights on.

I also have an aftermarket Sony face off stereo which does the "Diddle Diddle - Diddle Diddle" that Landcrusher so eloquently described. This is the Stereo trying to remind me that I have left the face panel on.

Hope this helps.

Oliver.

I get an alarm when the head lights are on and also another one when the sunroof is open but I think you have these covered.

There is also an alarm in the clock on the center of the dash which can be set to come on at the same time every day so if you are getting into the LC at the same time then it could be that, other than that I've no idea as there don't seem to be any other alarms on mine apart fromthe security ones?

Very Happy  Now this will make you laugh. I had a mystery alarm going off on my 2000 Colorado GX, it was totally random and woke up everyone in the vicinity at all times of the night, could I find what the problem was? Not immediately, stupid thing is it never happened during the day??? So why at night??? Mystery deepens..... read on.....  So, I always ensured no ones Mobile phone was in the car (yes this had set it off before) still not solved. Then one day I was having a clear up of the interior and noticed some small black pellets, this got me thinking, then I noticed a distinct lack of crumbs from my 6 year olds snacks etc when he resides in the back seat and proceeds to chuck his food in all directions. I had an idea then what it might be.

I am sure most of you have guessed by now, so I set a trap.... No not a mean killing device..... I set the alarm as usual then lay in wait armed with a bright torch, low and behold my alarm sounded, on went the torch searching the inside of the car with the alarm wailing and there he was, a field mouse hopping about inside the car!! I then realised how he got there, I have to take my rubbish bags to the end of our drive, he was an innocent passenger. How did I get rid? well I left the rear door open one evening and he left of his own accord, I saw the trail of fresh poop! Hilarious.  Very Happy
