You can get to some of it through a hole in the inner arch from the engine bay. But it's easier to take out the plastic liner and do it that way.

You might get a bit dirty though.

Are you refering to the plastic wheel arch liners? My '98 Amazon doesn't seem to have these.A dealer told me to remove the liner to get at the alarm siren in the left wheel arch.Thats when I discovered there weren't any!!Got to the siren by removing the marker light. The siren was about 1ft in front of the ariel so you might JUST be able to reach it that way.

Phil.

I fitted a new one to mine, did it all from under the bonnet through a cutout that is in the inner wing. Had to cut the cable though to avoid having to take the dash apart as the cable is one long one from the aerial straight to the back of the stereo. I cut and joined it and it works well. Will one day go and get a proper in line plug for it.

Took about 15 minutes total.

Thanks Lucky.
Job done now Very Happy
I found it a bit of a pig - it was all through the hole in the inner wing under the bonnet, but mine had aftermarket stuff fitted in the way. Mine had been changed before and the cable joined.
I removed the radio dash (4 screws, 2 under the cassette slot that pulls out, plus one push fit clip), the radio (4 screws), and dropped the glovebox (2 @ 2 piece clips that pull apart). It is a bit of a job getting the cable through, I used a draw wire first on the old cable, then a sleeve that came with the new aerial to get the socket on the end through the hole in the bulkhead. If you lay on the engine you can almost get your hand in the wing to guide it through the hole Confused
Only problem with mine is that you have to push both switches for the aerial to raise - the generic ones I guess are designed to work directly off the sterio feed.
Also need to watch you sod about using the right aerial to wing adaptor, or else it will be loose - my old one was. I adapted fittings from both the old and new aerial.
Good luck anyone about to have a go Very Happy
Phil

I got mine from the local Toyota dealership, you can't get the ones operated by the buttons on the dash from anywhere else. You could do away with the buttons and go for a fully automatic one, however I like the fact of being able to adjust the height for going into carparks.

My local dealer quoted £25 for the mast and an incredible £125+vat for the aerial motor for my Colorado. So it's probably similarly priced for the 80 series, if not the same.

Ended up taking apart the exisiting motor and refitting it with a new mast. It now works OK most of the time, though it very occasionally stops about 2" from full retraction - even then, switching the radio on/off again makes it retract fully.

I have a manual antenna, but would prefer electric. Can this be easily retrofitted? Prefer oem.

Cheers,

£170 notes for a simple metal tube and a nylon cable - what a rip-off.

You got that right, couldn't find a cheaper way of doing it though that would work with the existing switches as I wanted the adjustment of height as the LC is very tight in height for some local muti story carparks.
