Hi,
I'm looking to get my Cruiser out to Botswana this summer.
Sadly I don't have time to drive down and so I need to ship.
Do you have any advice, or companies that you'd recommend?

Hi Kate, my HZJ78 is getting shipped next week - MSC were by far the cheapest (Ghana to Walvis Bay). To be honest we ship stuff all over the globe and for Africa-Europe 9 times out of 10 MSC give the best rates. Maybe see you down there - Botswana is a definate destination! Oh and container all the way - you would be AMAZED what we have lost from vehicles on RORO. WTF does anyone do with 6 Renault truck cabin jack pumps??? or a HZJ105 gear knob!

Well the vehicle gets shipped next week, our official last day is the 31st of May - we then go home to EU for a bit of unwinding (Spain and Germany) before flying to Namibia at the beginning of July. As far as routes go, the cool thing is so far we have no plan (really) other than an urge to see PLENTY of Namibia, Botswana, ZA, and more... Really that is it. I intend to do loads of background reading of country guides (Amazon was a good friend last leave!) sitting on my folks' terrace in Andalusia... right now just too busy with job, car, leaving etc!

Yup - will start a thread from the point of container stuffing onwards. Good camera is covered, coms well certainly no web access Confused

but I assume/hope that web access is possible from cafes/communication centres etc. Certainly here it is pretty popular that way as so few people have home access...

Car names - well strangely I have never named cars or bikes. I always just refer to them as "the troopy" or "the bl**dy defender" (joke!)... Just don't really see a name fitting a car. Not that I don't get attached to them Rolling Eyes

My 2 nephew's
They each drove their MR2's down to Southampton, while I followed in another car to bring them back.

They used Wallenius Wilhelmsen Southampton to Port Elizabeth.
RoRo.

No RoRo in Cape Town (final destination) so PE was closest.
Not sure of the agent, I will find out.

We have shipped literally dozens of vehicles by Roro and by container. While the big Roro/dedicated vehicle carriers on routes between say Japan and EU/US or between EU and US may well be fairly secure, we have lost so much stuff from vehicles I have lost track. I am not talking about stuff in the vehicles - I am talking about parts that are integrated to the vehicle. As I mentioned we lost half a dozen hydraulic pump units from a bunch of Renault trucks. We have also lost stereos, tool kits, jacks, manuals, fire extinguishers, gear knobs, etc etc. While damage can happen whichever way you ship theft in RoRo is a huge issue here. I would on no account have even considered Roro for my vehicle bearing in mind
a) how much stuff is inside or bolted on
b) the route (esp as trans shipments also increase theft possibility).

I have been on a few vessels here and on one memorable occasion the drunken captain I would not trust let alone the crew...

Totally deviating from the point here, but if you ever see an old (1996) movie on TV called Deadly Voyage then watch it. It has nothing to do with Landcruisers, but a lot to do with Ghana and the crews of ships. More on the story here:
