need some help here please, this is getting annoying and more so that i cant find the fault.
Only recently this noise has developed, it only comes in at speeds over 50mph, it sounds like a road noise if ya get me, its like consant buzzing, that hasnt been there before!
My tyres are not too old, 80% tread left on them and they are Oem Dunlops. Its an 05 lc4 with 38k on it.
I checked everything,(i`m a mechanic myself) balanced the wheels, swaped the tyres around, Checked all the wheel bearings for the play and everything is good. Im suspecting either the propshaft, rear diff, or the gearbox itself but im not just 100% sure. Do these give any trouble or is there any know faults with drivetrain on 120 series?
Any info or advice much appriciated,
thanks

Its sounds like a wheel bearing noise, the only way to explain this but is not the wheel bearing

The first thing I would do is give the d\rive shafts and yolks a good greasing.
After the long winter in Oslo, I had a few people suggest to me as the continual ice, snow, and slush gets almotst everywhere.

So a quick run down to Snapdrive in Rodevet, just outside Oslo, and they pumped it with grease.
It was quieter and less vibration, thats for shore.

Have a look at the catalytic converter. It probably has a metal plate over the top half to reduce the risk of something getting laid on it a catching fire. Unfortunately, this metal plate is attached to the body of the converter at each end. The brackets rust through at one end making the plate/converter into a sort of vibrating noise box. The noise suddenly appears as the speed of the car, wind pressure and vibrations coming from the engine down the exhaust pipe all combine at a particular speed to create a resonant vibration of the plate. You can wrap some steel wire round the converter to hold the plate still and stop it vibrating.

It's a fairly well known problem on 80 and 100 series cars so I don't see why it shouldn't apply to your car as well.

Check that the air filter housing is sitting correctly. If its out it will vibrate against the body and transmit noise/vibration throught the vehicle.

Another point that can cause vibration is if the slip joint on the propshaft has been over greased. I did it to mine and only found it after I had had my wheels re-balanced. Remove the grease nipple and run over some bumpy terrain, which should throw out the excess, then replace the nipple. Worked for me!

i only greased mine a while ago, never tought of that, will check it again tommorow.

Also i noticed there was a slight noise coming out of the transfer box when spining the propshaft, i dont know weather that is normal or not??
I rang my local toyota dealer and few gearbox specialists and both have told me that 120`s suffer with chain stretching in transfer box, but after certian mileage.
thanks
