I have an old laptop kicking about (long since replaced with a Mac hence the amount of free time I now have) and I was wondering if I could stick it in my Cruiser. Memory Map seems to be what people talk about, but how do you gt the GPS signal in there? I have a pda (compaq) that DOES link to a little gps unit where I used to run TomTom.
The gps bit still works, the pda still works and the lap top works. Non have any relationship to each other anymore. Reckon I can hook it all up? The pda has a usb connection.
While you think about that. I'll give it a go.
Yeah, odd post I know.

No, I haven't. Is it expensive? Not even looked yet, just think that having a PC and mapping might be quite cool. Don't really do green laning, but would be good to have them on there so I can see where my local ones are.

Funnily enough I've been looking at getting my laptop on the web through my mobile this weekend. Must be something in the air (boom boom) _________________ '98 Colorado KZJ95 1KZTE

I am not sure what it costs......
I got a copy of my mate...
It seems pretty good but my tomtom 700 has a plotter so I usually just get the coordinates of the net now and put them in....
I found it a lot of faffing with the laptop...
I am looking to get a proper little pc build in at some stage with a 10" or 15" touch screen in the dash to work the navigation...
I have seen it done with a 15" on IH8MUD and it looks the business..... _________________ Early K-reg (UK truck) Landcruiser Amazon 4.2 TD VX |

That was probably my old 80 and ROTW, never seen another one
Landcrusher - the main problem with laptops in the truck seems to be the mounting system and how much space is occupied. Ok if you don't use the passenger seat ... You could hide the laptop away somewhere in the back and run a small touch screen off it though and just make a mounting for that. _________________ Jon m0zxj

My Laptop connects to my old TomTom Naviagtor 5 Bluetooth GPS receiever just using the inbuilt bluetooth. You need to make sure it pairs and sets up a virtual COM port and then tell Memory Map in the options to look at that port for the GPS. Worked first time on mine easy peasy. alternative is to get a Serial (more expensive) or USB (Cheaper) GPS and hook it up to the laptop.
Mine is a Panasonic Toughbook CF-28 with a car docking station and a wireless (WIFI) driven touch screen that I can mount on the dashboard on a pDA mount (I stuck one of the universal sockets on the back of the touch screen and it just clips in and unclips. You can also get touchscreens to connect to other laptops which generally have two connectors used - standard VGA out and a USB for the touchscreen capability (it emulates a USB mouse).
Panasonic even do a nice little PC which is designed to be fitted in cars - a Toughbook CF-07. Is only a pretty old processor but will run MemoryMap great and it uses the same wireless screen that mine uses and runs Windows XP. _________________ 1999 Land Cruiser Amazon VX Active 4.2TD Auto

Hmm, I may need to rethink this. I have a Global sat receiver which is blue tooth. It may connect to my laptop with a blue tooth dongle. I also have a Garmin GPSV unit which I know will work on the Mapsource package, but I don't think it has lanes on it.
Or I could just follow one of you guys...

Like all computers they can be a lot of trouble so I'd say it depends how much you'd use it other than for lanes? I've found the Garmin GPS III to V units very reliable and that's what I use on my PC rather than the BT or USB jobbies which have been unreliable for me. Following someone else is a lot more relaxing than leading but the view is never as good _________________ Jon m0zxj

That's encouraging. My GPS V is fine and I know it does work with my laptop. Don't think I'd use it a lot, but a nice add on if I need it. My gps head unit in the LC does show some lanes actually. It doesn't have a pc out interface though. Anyway, not in a rush for this. Lots to do before I get to it.

When I go laning, I either follow or if I’m leading, I prepare the route of lanes on my home PC using MM. I identify the beginning of each lane and enter the coordinates into my TomTom and set each new lane as a waypoint within an itinerary.
I then have an inexpensive PDA with a built-in GPS running MM with the latest Trail Wise overlays added for the areas I go laning in.
I have both units running side-by-side in my vehicle and the TomTom directs me to the beginning of each lane and I then refer to MM on the PDA whilst on the lanes!
This method is a very relaxing way of laning and it works for me! _________________ Peter

Ram-mount make some good mounts especially for Laptops. If you want to fit it in the rear of the vehicle both them and Gamber Johnson make some brilliant bits of kit.
One important thing to remember, if you are building a Car Computer for use in an off road vehicle it's going to get some serious jarring. Not a worry for most bits but you may want to make sure that the Hard Disk is shock mounted in foam or something like that. _________________ 1999 Land Cruiser Amazon VX Active 4.2TD Auto
