Well Ladies, gents, and gangsters,
I have departed our fair shores for a far away exoctic land called China.
Nantong, is just a few miles north of Shanghai.
.
.
.
Found me another new oil rig that needs my attention.
This is what we call a 'jack-up'
It sits on 3 legs, and drills for oil.
This is just some of the leg length, the remainder of the leg length will be fitted once away from this berth, as there is a road bridge to pass under.
This rig sits on 3 jacking legs, which stand on the botton of the ocean.
.
.
.
Here a a few diesel engines to keep you all happy.

You lucky bu**er. That last pic would be heaven for me. Just like an auxillary machinery room on a destroyer.
Engines you can work on without removing loads of c**p first. _________________ Les

LOL,
You can even get inside the crank cases if you want !
Did you ever lift the mains, or big ends and 'take leads' ?
V16 diesels, not sure of power, perhaps around 5000 hp continuous.

The ones we had were Paxman 16 cyl.
Only slightly smaller than them judging by the bloke in the piccy.
You could open the side cases and replace big ends etc without too much hassle.
Even had one running after a broken con rod with the piston seized in the bore. Seemed to work fine on 15 cyls.
Beauty of that was, when we got along side we just lifted out the cylinder and replaced it and the piston etc.
If they are similar, the turbo would be under that big silver collar around the exhaust.
Our genny's were only half the physical size as those in your picture.
Makes me wish I was still in the Navy. Never mind eh! life goes on. _________________ Les

Hi Ecky,
I also have seen the Paxmans at work, and work they can,
Where the turbo sits at the end of the engine, I have seen the turbo so hot, the turbo casing is almost translucent, and you can see the shadow of the rotor within it.

Where the turbo sits at the end of the engine, on top, I have seen the turbo so hot, the turbo casing is almost translucent, and you can see the shadow of the rotor within it.

Hi Vette
I never saw them working at their full potential.
Two were enough to run the whole ship with all the weapon systems running and we had four to do it with.
The Navy have back up systems for the back up systems so there is usually three to four times what is actually needed.
The only times I saw everything running were during excersises or when the Argentine planes were throwing large
lumps of metal at us that had a tendancy to go bang. _________________ Les

Hey TJ, I did 3 months in Honkers. You know that best thing there?
THE FLIGHT HOME!
Didn't like it all. Wall to wall people, hellish humidity, SARS, ok clean streets, fantastic underground (MTR) but overall, couldn't wait to leave. I was working though.

HAHA well I was only there for a bit and this is in 2003....
and I did like it.... But short term only I think
don't think I would have lasted long... I did love it but I am not a city person....
I love the open spaces and quiet... _________________ Early K-reg (UK truck) Landcruiser Amazon 4.2 TD VX |
