The next mod on the list for my 100 was getting the spare wheel out from underneath and onto a swing out carrier of some sort. I decided on an OEM style carrier with a little modification because it would be independent of me getting round to building a back bumper so I bought one (260350795368) off e bay. For a comercial product I wasn't overly impressed with the welds but in the end decided to carry on and redo anything I didn't think would survive.

My 100 is a UK model so it would need some plates making for inside the body panels where the carrier would mount to add some strength. I rummaged and found some suitable bits of 6mm thick plate and bent and cut them to match the curves of the carrier hinge castings:



Then I drilled the holes for the hinges in the bodywork and bolted the carrier on for a tyre test fit:



oops, as anticipated there's a bit of a problem with big tyres obscuring the lights! With a standard size tyre this wouldn't happen but the 36" Simex is too close to the light, too low and too wide (had to let air out to get it mounted).

Off came the carrier and out came the grinder and the welder  Laughing  I cut the wheel mounting off, welded a couple of 100mmx6mm straps along side of the origional mounting tubes, a bit of 50mm equal angle went onto that and then the origional mount welded to that. That moved the wheel mounting point about 100mm towards the centre, about 75mm up and about 20mm out



I also added a couple of strengthening plates and some small mounting tabs in case I want to bolt any extras to it at a later date. For mounting the number plate I put a bit of 50mm box into the middle of the wheel mount with a hole through the end a bit like a hitch receiver. The plan is to be able to insert an extra section between the carrier and number plate to serve as a cycle carrier for my daughters bike but I haven't got that far yet  Surprised



You might be able to see a bolt hanging from the bottom of the carrier. That's my ever so fancy stop to hold the carrier open. I drilled a hole through the lower hinge casting, the bolt is pulled out of the wire noose holding it in the picture and dropped into the hinge hole to hold the carrier open  Smile



Now the lights are plenty visible even with a 36" Simex mounted. The number plate light I got second hand off e bay, I think it's supposed to live on a Prado but it works for me on a 100  Cool



The Simex sits at a much better height now as well. It could have gone a bit higher but then it would have more of an impact on the view out the back which at this height isn't a problem.

Laughing The only tricky bit really was getting the mounting plates the right shape and even that wasn't as much trouble as I'd expected. You need the carrier on hand though to use as a template and the top hinge curve is the hardest to match. Seems very rigid when I heave up and down on the end of the carrier so I don't think there will be any problems with it handling the extra weight and leverage from the big tyre and new position.

It is Lincomb mud but they're different tyres in the pictures  Laughing The first one is on a black wheel and was on the truck at Lincomb. The last one is on a silver wheel and is the spare that was in the boot at Lincomb  Wink  They all got a 'wash' on Sunday at Bala 4x4 where there are some nice deep puddles to play in so now I know the petrol engine's quite happy running in deep water (with the snorkel obviously) as it was totaly submerged for a while as I tried to push a stuck LR90 back out the way so I could get through  Rolling Eyes

The base product isn't fantastic quality Mark and only time will tell how well it lasts but the basic structure is sound now so if the only issues I have are cosmetic I can live with that  Laughing  It's not going to win any show and shine contest anyway  Wink



Now for some sliders, the side steps are getting a bit wobbly.

The Simex rub on the front on full lock a little on the chassis and upper suspension arm (no spacers). How much they rub varies with the suspension setting because with the suspension on H the track is narrower. Some 20mm spacers would probably resolve that. They rubbed on the OEM front bumper but not on the TJM  Very Happy A little trimming of the OEM would have stopped them rubbing but I knew a TJM would be going on so let them rub. They also rubbed on the front mud flaps and the body seam behind them so I took the flaps off and trimmed the excess metal from the seam  Laughing

The body lift is only 16mm, just enough to stop the Simex munching the front wing at full compression on a turn. The lift itself is very easy except for the two extra bolts that are hidden just behind the second row seats and don't appear on any Toyota diagrams or parts lists AFAIK. They're some sort of factory assembly aide as best I can tell. I turned some delrin pucks, got a few extra OEM No. 1 body mount bolts and some longer bolts from our local bolt shop, I have all the numbers here somewhere but there's nothing tricky. The OEM front bumper stretched to fill the gap because of the way it fits but the rear of the rear stays put (bolts to chassis cross member) while the wheel arch end goes up leaving you with a saggy back end  Laughing I did a bit of cutting and welding on the brackets to get mine back into the right place, I took some pictures but I can't remember if I posted anything on here. A little while after doing the lift I lowered the radiator fan shroud a bit to improve clearance at the bottom. Those were extra jobs needed because of the body lift but done at a later date as seperate projects.

Thanks Jon.  Sounds like a bit beyond my capability Shocked, might stick to plan A - 2" suspension lift (OME???) and keep my 33" Cooper STTs.  Love your front bumper, the snorkel looks good in blue aswell, lovely looking truck all round mate, well done!!!!  Keep us posted on the developments!!! Very Happy

You should really only need a body lift if you go to 35's or bigger but if you can install an OME 2" suspension lift then a body lift is pretty easy really. Thanks for the complements BTW, next mods should be making some sliders and installing the Pacemaker headers Julian's got for me  Laughing

I have a wheel carrier like yours but i am missing one of the plastic covers that go over the side of the hinge. any idea where i can get one from?

If yours is OEM then you should be able to get them from Toyota. If it's an e bay special like mine then I don't know how closely they've knocked off the origional design to know if they're interchangeable with OEM or you could try contacting the origional supplier to see if they carry spares.
